Taking proactive steps now will help ensure both you and your animals remain safe during severe weather. DACC encourages all pet owners to assemble an emergency pet kit in case conditions require leaving the home quickly.

A well-prepared pet emergency kit should include:

Food and water

Veterinary records

Medications

Leashes, harnesses, crates, or carriers ready for transport

Microchip information

Having these supplies accessible will make a significant difference if you must evacuate due to flooding or other storm-related hazards. A microchipped pet with up-to-date owner information also greatly improves the chances of reunification should you become separated during an emergency.

“El Niño storms can arrive quickly and create dangerous conditions for people and their pets,” said DACC Director Marcia Mayeda. “Taking simple steps now, such as preparing an emergency pet kit and having an evacuation plan, can protect the animals you love and help ensure their safety during severe weather.
