SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — New proposed regulations could ensure your auto insurance premiums are based on your driving, not your personal life.<\/p>\n

For the past 30 years, insurance companies could factor in if you’re single or married… charging more if you’re single by arguing that single people statistically get into more accidents.<\/p>\n

Now, Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara has proposed changes<\/a> to a law that says rates are required to be based on a driver’s safety record, annual miles driven and years of driving experience — but that other personal characteristics are allowed to be considered too.<\/p>\n

Lara’s proposed changes would eliminate marital status as one of those factors.<\/p>\n

In a statement, Commissioner Lara said: “We are taking action to end that outdated practice and reinforce a simple principle: Insurance rates should be grounded in actual driving risk, not personal circumstances that have nothing to do with how someone behaves behind the wheel.”<\/p>\n

The changes are still under review, with a stated goal of implementation by July 2027.<\/p>\n
