The race to become Los Angeles’ next city attorney pits two Democratic candidates with different priorities on public safety and consumer protections.

Marissa Roy advanced to the November runoff after winning 43.1% of the vote in the June primary. John McKinney finished second with 28.6%, edging out incumbent City Attorney Hydee Feldstein Soto.

Roy is a deputy attorney general with the California Department of Justice under Attorney General Rob Bonta. She previously worked in the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office, handling cases involving workers’ rights and wage theft.

McKinney is a deputy district attorney with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. A veteran prosecutor, he has handled several high-profile cases, including the murder of rapper Nipsey Hussle.

While their campaign platforms share some common ground, McKinney has emphasized crime reduction and public safety, while Roy has highlighted tenant, worker and consumer protections.

Their endorsements also reflect different political constituencies. Roy is backed by Planned Parenthood, the Los Angeles County Democratic Party and the Democratic Socialists of America’s Los Angeles chapter, among other groups.

McKinney has received endorsements from current Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman, former District Attorney Jackie Lacey and several City Council members, including Traci Park, John Lee, Tim McOsker and Monica Rodriguez.

The Los Angeles city attorney serves as the city’s chief legal adviser, represents the city in legal proceedings and oversees the prosecution of misdemeanors and certain other offenses within city limits. These cases can include theft, vandalism and other violations of state law or city ordinances.

The race to become Los Angeles’ next city attorney pits two Democratic candidates with different priorities on public…

[27
38024,48,52,51,47,50,49
post-489664","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-los-angeles","tag-decision-2026","tag-la","tag-la-headlines","tag-la-news","tag-los-angeles","tag-los-angeles-headlines","tag-los-angeles-news
["GET
