While what’s traditionally been known as Columbus Day never really caught on as a paid holiday in California, local movements have led the effort to change the focus of the holiday to a celebration of Indigenous people.

Back in 1992, the 500th anniversary of Columbus’ arrival in the Americas, the Berkeley City Council became the first municipality to develop an alternative to Columbus Day and replace it with a day celebrating Native Americans and Indigenous people, following in the footsteps of South Dakota, the first state to do so.
