The new district includes communities such as Downey, Bellflower, Lakewood and Santa Fe Springs.

Calvert, who has served in Congress for more than three decades, quickly pivoted and decided to run in the newly drawn 40th District, setting up a contest with Kim, who represents the existing district.

Despite Democrats’ hopes that Calvert and Kim would split the Republican vote, the two GOP candidates secured the top two spots in the June primary, advancing to the general election.

MAGA vs. MAGA?

Calvert received nearly 35% of the vote in the June primary, compared with approximately 20% for Kim.

Although the two candidates drew similar levels of support in Orange County, voters in the Riverside County portion of the district overwhelmingly backed Calvert.

Kim, who was first elected to Congress in 2020 and has often positioned herself as a moderate Republican, has increasingly embraced her ties to Trump during the primary campaign, describing herself as a “Trump Republican” as she seeks to shore up support among conservative voters.

But as the U.S. war with Iran drags on, growing concerns about the economy and affordability, issues many voters increasingly associate with President Trump, are prompting both candidates to adjust their campaign strategies.

Distancing themselves from Trump?

As affordability has emerged as one of the top issues in the November election, Trump’s approval ratings have fallen. According to a recent Pew Research Center survey, 68% of Americans disapprove of Trump’s job performance, while 30% approve.

That may help explain why Kim has quietly scrubbed references to Trump from her campaign website.

“Working families are struggling to make ends meet, and I’m working to lower the cost of gas, groceries, and utilities and make it easier for families to get ahead,” Kim says on her campaign website, without mentioning the president.

Calvert has also reduced the prominence of Trump in his campaign messaging.

Despite previously touting his close ties to the president, Calvert does not mention Trump on his campaign website, although his campaign video includes clips of the Republican president.

Establishment vs. Outsider

Kim, who has served in Congress since 2021 and previously served in the California State Assembly, does not appear to view herself as a career politician.

As she clashes with Calvert, who was first elected to Congress in 1992, Kim is portraying herself as a moderate Republican who supports fiscal conservatism while backing a path to citizenship for recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program or DACA.

Calvert, on the other hand, emphasizes his congressional record and his efforts to secure billions of dollars in federal funding for his constituents.

The longtime congressman supports lower taxes, aligning with Trump’s agenda. He has signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge, promising to oppose tax increases.

Calvert has also taken positions that have diverged from those of some conservatives on social issues. Although he opposed allowing LGBTQ people to serve openly in the U.S. military, he voted in favor of the Respect for Marriage Act, which established federal protections for same-sex marriages.

Next month, voters in Congressional District 40, which stretches across eastern Orange County and into the Inland Empire,…

[6
7,9,8,38024,610,611
post-491197","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-california","tag-california","tag-california-headlines","tag-california-news","tag-decision-2026","tag-inland-empire","tag-orange-county
["GET
