We have highly talented guys, but we’re going to walk out as one on Saturday.”

Scott, a transfer from Mater Dei, made quite the first impression in his first game with the Jackrabbits last week.

The 6-foot-5, left-handed quarterback threw for 301 yards and five touchdowns in Poly’s 55-0 win against Lakewood in a Moore League opener. He also ran for 49 yards on four carries.

The Jackrabbits improved to 3-4 overall, including a forfeit victory against Yorba Linda.

Before Scott’s debut — he had to six out the first six games due to CIF-SS transfer rules — Poly averaged 11.4 points during a five-game losing streak.

“It was more of a statement game,” Scott said of the victory, “showing what we could do. Showing our offense doesn’t have to struggle every game. Senior Jayden Coley had six receptions for 97 yards and two touchdowns. Junior Zion Anderson had five receptions for 138 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Donte Wright Jr., who is committed to Miami, had two receptions for 54 yards and one touchdown.

Long Beach Poly’s first-year coach, Travon Patterson, was more than pleased with Scott’s initial performance.

“I thought he had a lot of composure,” Patterson said. “A lot of poise. He did a lot better than I anticipated. It just shows how mature he is as a young guy, how much he goes about the day-to-day preparation.”

Poly’s defense was aided by the return of five-star defensive back Julius Johnson (UCLA commit), who missed five games with an injury, and senior edge rusher Sevelino Taliauli (Colorado State commit), who had to sit out the team’s first six games after transferring from Servite.

Patterson said last week’s win energized his team.

“It just sparked them again,” Patterson continued. “It brought that spark back. They believe in themselves. They know that they’re a team that went through a lot of adversity. They’ve overcome the adversity and they know that as long as they play together as a team and capitalize on all cylinders that they’ll be good.”

Patterson, who was previously the team’s associate head coach, said he learned an important lesson a year ago when Poly lost to Wilson 22-21 after leading 21-6 in the third quarter.

“One thing we know is Wilson is going to have their team prepared,” Patterson said. “They’re a very disciplined team. Obviously, they’ve shown signs that they’re not going to give up. Obviously, we were ahead in that game. They fought back and they won at the end, so we just have to make sure that we’re continuing to take advantage of our opportunities and eliminating our mistakes.”

In Scott’s second start, he wants nothing more than for Poly to win.

“A lot of high school teams don’t get to play on Saturday, so we’re going to make the best of it and go out with a win,” Scott said.

Long Beach Poly sophomore quarterback Trevor Scott threw for 301 yards and five touchdowns in his debut in a 55-0 win over Lakewood last week.@T_Scott4x is excited and confident heading into a Moore League showdown against rival Wilson at Cabrillo High on Saturday night. pic.twitter.com/cxwXuS1mkU

— John W.
