A Macomb County man died a day after he was involved in a two-vehicle crash in Rochester Hills, but preliminary autopsy results indicate his death was not caused by injuries sustained in the crash, police said.<\/p>\n
The crash took place about 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, on West Hamlin Road, west of Crooks Road.<\/p>\n
According to the Oakland County Sheriff\u2019s Office, a 2025 Ram 1500 driven by a 43-year-old Commerce Township man was stopped in the eastbound through lane of West Hamlin Road. A 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by a 40-year-old Shelby Township man, was traveling eastbound on West Hamlin Road, straddling the through lane and center turn lane as it approached Crooks Road.<\/p>\n
Investigators said the driver of the Jeep failed to navigate around the stopped Ram, resulting in a collision between the two vehicles.<\/p>\n
Sheriff\u2019s deputies and personnel from the Bloomfield Township Fire Department responded to the crash and provided medical assistance. The driver of the Ram sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.<\/p>\n
Authorities said the driver of the Jeep also appeared to have sustained minor injuries and was conscious, alert and communicating with first responders following the collision. He was transported to Trinity Health Oakland Hospital for further evaluation and treatment.<\/p>\n
During the initial investigation, deputies saw indications of possible alcohol impairment involving the Jeep driver. A blood sample was obtained for analysis.<\/p>\n
The driver of the Ram was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Seat belt use by the Jeep driver has not been determined. The names of the drivers have not been released.<\/p>\n
At approximately 1:15 p.m. Friday, the driver of the Jeep was pronounced dead at the hospital.<\/p>\n
An autopsy conducted Saturday morning by the Oakland County Medical Examiner\u2019s Office indicated that the death was not directly caused by injuries sustained in the collision, although alcohol use was identified as a contributing factor.<\/p>\n
The Oakland County Sheriff\u2019s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit is assisting deputies from the Rochester Hills substation in investigating the crash.<\/p>\n
