The only indication of what the wait is for: a minimalist hand-drawn sign on a plastic A-frame — “mango sticky rice” and “Thai tea,” it reads, pointing to a bare-bones stand tucked behind a fence. Toward the back of the line, which crawls for half an hour before reaching the stand, teens rapidly scroll through TikToks out loud, while another pair idly chats about the day’s school lesson. At the front, two men hand boxes of glistening sliced mango and bouncy sticky rice over the table, with most plates paired with burnt-orange Thai tea. Although the city has plenty of places to get mango sticky rice, Los Angeles can’t get enough of this new stand, named only for what it serves.

Apinatt Watthanavanit launched his mango sticky rice business in May 2026 as a side project; he expected it to remain a small neighborhood stand serving a few dozen orders a day to the local community. Watthanavanit tells Eater that he grew up around Thai food and markets where they treat mango sticky rice with care and he hoped to bring that to the neighborhood. “The mango, the rice, the coconut cream, everything has to be just right,” he says. In August 2026, after just three months of operation, creator Aysha Harun posted a video about the stand, which has racked up more than 26,000 likes. Quickly, the stand went from just a few customers a day to selling out within one to two hours, with a line forming before it even opens. Watthanavanit says the experience has been “incredibly humbling.” To date, the quickest sell-out has been 45 minutes.

Still, despite the virality, the stand remains a two-man operation, serving its simple menu of just tea and supple sticky rice. For Watthanavanit, the most important piece is the mango itself and capturing it at peak ripeness. “If the mango isn’t perfect, the dish isn’t good,” he says. The stand rotates its mangoes throughout the season based on what mango variety is at its best; some weeks it may be Ataulfo, while other may bring Keitt. Flyers announcing that day’s mango — as well as its sweetness level — get pasted along the line. Watthanavanit says the dish’s simplicity makes every detail matter; they make the sticky rice fresh daily, along with the rich coconut cream that treads a line between sweet and salty. On days when no mangoes are ripe enough, the stand serves only tea.

Watthanavanit tells Eater the stand will stay open as long as the mangoes are good; once the fruit is no longer up to par, he will hit pause on it. “The season depends on the mango, not on us,” Watthanavanit says. Until then, the stand will keep slinging sticky rice out of the Historic Filipinotown parking lot Tuesday through Sunday, from 4 p.m. until sell-out.

Mango Sticky Rice Stand is open Tuesday through Sunday at 2006 W.
