Firefighters were making progress Sunday evening on a fast-moving wildfire burning near homes in the outskirts of Santa Clarita. Evacuation orders for the Bike fire<\/a> remained in effect as both L.A. County Fire and Angeles National Forest crews responded to the blaze.<\/p>\n

At about 4 p.m., a state emergency intelligence airplane mapped the fire at roughly 170 acres. Angeles National Forest officials said the fire was 12% contained<\/a> around 4:45 p.m.<\/p>\n

Earlier, around 1:20 p.m., smoke was visible in the rugged hills along the southeast side of the city, as reported by a Watch Duty user<\/a>. An hour later, the L.A. County Sheriff\u2019s Department ordered residents to evacuate as the fire grew in size. <\/p>\n

L.A. County set up an evacuation shelter<\/a> at College of the Canyons, at 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road in Santa Clarita, and an animal shelter at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds, 2551 W. Ave. H in Lancaster.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Forest Service and the L.A. County Fire Department had aircraft at work against the blaze, including a Super Scooper, the Angeles National Forest said in a Facebook post<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The remnants of tropical storm Rachel brought rain and gnarly ocean conditions<\/a> to much of Southern California, damaging homes in Newport Beach and flooding the Coachella Valley.
