Donavan Phillip became the youngest player in Colorado Rapids history to score in three consecutive matches as the Rapids drew 1-1 with the San Jose Earthquakes at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday night. Dave Romney’s second-half volley cancelled out Phillip’s first-half header and stretched San Jose’s unbeaten run to seven matches.

Phillip makes Rapids history

The night belonged to Donavan Phillip. The 21-year-old rose highest at the back post to meet Paxten Aaronson’s inswinging corner in the 27th minute and headed Colorado ahead, his third goal in as many matches. At 21 years and 279 days, he is the youngest player in club history to score in three straight games, according to the Rapids’ official match recap.

It is some rise for a third-round pick from the 2025 MLS SuperDraft. Phillip has started regularly only since Rafael Navarro’s $12 million summer move to St. Louis opened a path into the side, and all three of his MLS career goals have arrived in his last three appearances. Navarro, for context, scored twice and assisted twice in St. Louis’ 6-2 demolition of the LA Galaxy on Sunday, which tells you plenty about the size of the hole Phillip was asked to fill.

Aaronson deserves credit too. His corner was inch-perfect, and the assist took him to six goal contributions in his last five league appearances, three goals and three assists. San Jose goalkeeper Earl Edwards Jr. felt Josh Atencio had interfered with him on the play, but referee Filip Dujic saw nothing wrong and the goal stood.

San Jose now seven unbeaten

The Earthquakes left Colorado with a point that keeps a fine run going. They are now unbeaten in seven matches, with three wins and four draws, after losing four on the spin before that. Fourth place in the Western Conference on 46 points is a fair reflection of how far they have come.

Romney’s equaliser in the 57th minute was neatly worked. Timo Werner swung an outswinging free kick in from beyond the right corner of the penalty area, Ronaldo Vieira won the first ball at the back post and headed it back across goal, and Romney arrived to side-foot a volley that took a deflection on its way past Nico Hansen.

San Jose had thought they scored earlier, only for VAR to chalk the goal off, so there was a sense of justice about the eventual equaliser. They visit Real Salt Lake on Wednesday knowing another positive result keeps them in the top four.

Read nextFPLFPL Gameweek 6 Wildcard Draft: Best XI for the Deadline Both sides could easily have won it late, and both goalkeepers had their say. Edwards finished with nine saves for San Jose, the busier of the two by some distance, while Hansen made three stops at the other end.

The best of the late drama came in the final ten minutes. Preston Judd forced Hansen into a sprawling save with his left leg from close range in the 82nd minute, and four minutes later Edwards went full stretch to his left to keep out Darren Yapi’s close-range header. A draw was probably the fair outcome, but neither keeper will feel they deserved to end up on the losing side.

Colorado’s home fortress holds, just

Colorado remain a difficult side to beat in Commerce City. They are now eight unbeaten at home, with six wins and two draws, which is genuine fortress form. The problem is what happens around it: one win in their last six league matches overall tells the story of a side grinding rather than flowing.

They had the early VAR reprieve to thank for staying level in the first half, and Phillip’s moment of quality gave them something to protect. But they could not hold it, and with Minnesota visiting on Wednesday they need to turn home draws into home wins if the unbeaten stretch is going to mean anything.

What it means in the West

The point keeps Colorado eighth in the West on 37 points. They might have dropped to ninth had results gone against them on Sunday, but the Galaxy’s heavy defeat at St. Louis means the Rapids hold their position heading into the midweek round.

San Jose stay fourth on 46 points, nine clear of Colorado, and their seven-match unbeaten run is the joint story of the West alongside Seattle’s nine without defeat. With the regular season winding down and fixtures like Sporting KC’s 3-3 draw with Portland showing how tight the playoff race is, neither side could afford to lose this one. In the end, neither did.

Omar Haddad writes about Premier League football for The False 9 — tactical analysis, data-driven features and the global game.

Donavan Phillip became the youngest player in Colorado Rapids history to score in three consecutive matches as the…

[29
88,90,89
post-493303","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-jose","tag-san-jose","tag-san-jose-headlines","tag-san-jose-news
["GET
!["bleachers,]("https://www.newsbeep.com/us-ca/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/1867992-4-300x200.jpg")
