Department of Transportation<\/a> General Manager Laura Rubio-Cornejo announced the launch of the Speed Safety Systems Program, confirming the initial wave of 125 planned cameras will go live October 26. Complete system deployment across high-risk corridors is slated for completion by the end of 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excessive speed contributed to roughly 20 percent of the city\u2019s fatal vehicle collisions in 2024. Municipal leaders are deploying the technology under <a href=\"https:\/\/legiscan.com\/CA\/text\/AB645\/id\/3221577\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">California Assembly Bill 645<\/a>, which authorized a five-year pilot program for select California cities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drivers caught traveling at least 11 mph over the posted speed limit will receive written warnings during an initial 60-day grace period. Following that window, automated civil citations will start at $50 for vehicles exceeding limits by 11 to 15 mph. Vehicles traveling 16 mph or more over the limit face civil speeding violations starting at $100, with the full schedule of penalties published on <a href=\"http:\/\/laspeedsafety.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">LAspeedsafety.org<\/a>. Revenue from the fines is designated directly for local safe street infrastructure projects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">City officials selected locations for the speed camera installations using crash data and input from equity, civil liberties, and community groups, focusing heavily on school zones, senior centers, and high-injury corridors.
