College Area residents fear developer is steering library future, want city \u2013 or mayor \u2013 to step up<\/a><\/p>\n

The site of a monthly community meeting in the College Area was significant. It took place at a local union hall rather than the library, and the agenda only had one action item, to discuss ideas to keep the library accessible.<\/p>\n

It was also significant who attended \u2013 and who didn\u2019t \u2013 as residents grappled with the effect of a major construction project on the library.<\/p>\n

The audience questioned a representative for Councilmember Sean Elo-Rivera and the city\u2019s library director. But no one from Mayor Todd Gloria\u2019s office or the developer behind the project attended, an absence noted by both residents and Elo-Rivera\u2019s representative alike.<\/p>\n

A city directory can tell you where a motel stood. A postcard can show you what it looked like. A photograph can put it back on the street for a moment.<\/p>\n

The harder question is what happened afterward.<\/p>\n

Across San Diego County, roadside motor lodges were built around a simple idea: Travelers arrived by car, pulled into a convenient parking space and stayed close to the road.<\/p>\n

By the 1950s and 1960s, that formula had transformed places such as Mission Valley, San Ysidro, Pacific Beach, Carlsbad and Oceanside.<\/p>\n
