But determining whether someone can understand the proceedings and assist in their defense is not the same as excusing their alleged actions.

Civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson emphasizes proximity to people affected by injustice rather than judging them from a distance. This means acknowledging the victims’ families’ grief while recognizing that even those accused of terrible crimes deserve constitutional protections.

A competency evaluation does not determine guilt or innocence. It ensures that legal proceedings remain fair.

Justice loses its meaning when we defend constitutional rights only for those we find sympathetic.

Sandy Ualat
San Jose

Abuse kept secret can easily turn deadly

Re: “Morgan Hill man charged with murder” (Page B1, Oct. 8).

I was sickened by the savage beating and killing of a mother of three in our community. Those children probably saw and experienced the violence years before their mother was brutally murdered in their home.

This will have complicated psychological and relationship consequences in their adult lives if therapy and a positive male role model are not part of their lives going forward. Extreme anger and violence are a dangerous sickness that women have to recognize as soon as the red flag appears in the form of abuse. Telling someone like a family member, friend, co-worker, neighbor or trusted school or medical personnel will help to advise on help.

Keeping abuse secret because of shame, dependence or fear might not be what’s best for the family. Violent abusers thrive in secrecy. Help comes with transparency.

Patricia Marquez Rutt
Redwood City

Expanding cancer care is always the right move

Re: “El Camino Health expands capacity with new cancer center in Los Gatos” (Sept. 30).

Reading the news about El Camino Health expanding its capacity with a new cancer center in Los Gatos made me think. If you could make one wish, would you wish to have better resources for a disease that can happen to anyone?

Cancer can sometimes start as a silent disease, and even though we try to have good habits to prevent it, having access to proper treatment and resources is also important.

Resources like new hospitals, cancer centers and medical equipment are essential to provide better patient care.

The new cancer center in Los Gatos gives many patients a new chance and more support during treatment.

Take action by donating to hospital foundation campaigns or trusted GoFundMe campaigns that help patients and families access better cancer care.

Kaylane De Oliveira Borges Da Silva
Brentwood

Don’t surrender control of writing to AI just yet

Re: “Stop fighting it. AI writes better, but you are still the author.” (Page A6, Oct. 8).

AI is amazing at writing production. It can produce many more words per minute than I can type. The writing it produces has an unseasoned taste. It’s like frozen food.

I’m wary of giving AI full control over formal and creative writing. I think the line gets blurred for writing output in the question you asked: “What part of the work actually belongs to us?” Not only does that line get blurred, but so does the critical thinking behind it.

As a handicap for a time crunch or for the less grammatically inclined, AI is fine. Maybe it’s my own inexperience talking, but personal writing, formal or creative, creates artistic expression in contrast to using AI.

With U.S. literacy on the decline, total advocacy for AI-generated writing seems irresponsible for a process that might hurt more than it could help.

Diogenes Jasso
San Jose

Coverage of Trump is driven by his actions

If Donald Trump doesn’t like what the press is saying about him, there’s a simple solution: Do the job he promised to do.

Americans didn’t elect him to build a ballroom, erect a Trump arch, drain the Reflection Pool, impose tariffs on our neighbors or start a war with Iran. They elected him to lower prices, improve their lives and work for them.

Instead, they watch him play golf, visit his properties, promote his family’s business interests and reshape cryptocurrency regulations while his family stands to profit.

America didn’t send Trump to Washington to build monuments to himself or enrich his family. They sent him there to work for them.

Yet Trump spends his time attacking reporters and complaining about unfavorable headlines. But reporters didn’t make these decisions. Trump did.

The problem isn’t that the press keeps reporting what Trump does. The problem is what Trump keeps doing.

Mark Grzan
Morgan Hill

There’s still a way to go for equality in sports

The Golden State Warriors receive more attention than the Golden State Valkyries, highlighting the gender inequality that continues to exist in professional sports. The Warriors have generations of fans and decades of media coverage behind them, while women’s basketball has historically received less promotion and investment. This creates an engagement gap because audiences are more likely to follow sports they constantly see in the media.

The lack of coverage is especially noticeable during the Valkyries’ current playoff run. They recently defeated the Dallas Wings 77–73 to advance to the semifinals and then defeated the Las Vegas Aces 71–60 and 83–81 to take a 2–0 series lead. Despite these accomplishments, women’s basketball still does not receive the same level of attention as men’s basketball.

Advocating for justice means challenging this inequality and giving female athletes the visibility and recognition they deserve.

Sierra Belisario
San Jose

Submit your letter to the editor via this form.
