The mayor and four council members are directly elected by registered voters of Coronado.

The 45-year-old Coronado resident is one of four vying for two council seats.

Gade said he has been actively involved in local politics for more than a decade, funding a political action committee that supports “independent voices and sustainable governance.” He unsuccessfully ran for a council seat in 2024.

He has been endorsed by former Coronado Mayor Casey Tanaka.

City council races are nonpartisan.

The Union-Tribune emailed a series of questions to Gade and other candidates to help inform voters about their positions, priorities and plans if elected.

Gade said he did not use any AI tools in responding to the Union-Tribune’s questions.

1.) Why are you running, and what makes you the best candidate?

Coronado deserves leadership that is focused on long-term sustainability, both economically and environmentally. As an independent; I can help bring both sides together on issues and resolve partisan conflicts. As a small business owner, I solve problems on the spot and have no patience for procrastination. As a natural Mediator, my strength lies in the ability to bridge differences, foster understanding, and suggest balanced solutions that best represent the public’s interest.

2.) What are the top three issues facing this district and the city generally?

Cross border sewage crisis is the number 1 issue.

Struggling locally owned businesses.

Capital improvement project delays.

3.) What are the first three things you would do in office if elected?

Full court press on the sewage crisis.

Work directly with our small businesses, building owners, chamber of commerce, and discover Coronado, to find ways to fill and keep our storefronts occupied.

Help speed up capital improvement projects.

4.) Currently, there is a cross-border sewage crisis. What programs or plans to address the crisis do you think the city should fund or continue to support?

We need to take more than one approach when it comes to addressing this issue without relying solely on the federal government. Now that the County of San Diego has stepped up and accepted legal responsibility, I will hold them accountable to funding a permanent solution. Additionally, I will continue to advocate for environmental sustainability, because a healthy environment is essential to a healthy economy.

5.) In terms of public safety, what do you see as the three biggest challenges facing the city?

Recruiting and retaining so we can be fully staffed.

Coronado needs an additional full time ambulance.

Investing in new Fire Stations and updating our Police Station are critical long-term.

6.) How would you improve transparency and accountability for the city of Coronado?

Even though Coronado is already transparent, the city can still do a better job.

7.) Coronado has been successful in years past addressing homelessness issues on the island, recording a population in the single digits in some years. How do you believe the city can continue to aid and assist its unhoused people?

I would not propose any changes to assistance programs.

8.) What should the city do to combat its shortage of affordable homes, and what priorities should guide its housing plans? How would you assess the city’s progress?

Coronado should not make the mistake of overbuilding knowing it will not address the affordability crisis. More development means more homes for the wealthy. I’m against density and will be voting against measure D.

Andrew Gade, a San Diego State University alum and local business owner, is making his second bid for…

[28
1400,7,5493,204,989,23,205,100,13,74,84,76,75
post-494103","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-diego","tag-2026-elections","tag-california","tag-coronado","tag-election","tag-elections","tag-local-news","tag-local-politics","tag-news","tag-politics","tag-san-diego","tag-san-diego-county","tag-san-diego-headlines","tag-san-diego-news
["GET
