The San Francisco Police Department was in mourning Tuesday after a trailblazing police officer and her husband, who also had worked for the department, were found dead along with their daughter in what investigators are calling a “suspected double-murder suicide.”<\/p>\n
Retired Sgt. Kevin Mannix, 68, fatally shot his wife, Ann Mannix, 64, a retired deputy chief, and their 24-year-old daughter, Katherine Elizabeth Mannix, around 5 p.m. Sunday before turning the gun on himself, the Marin County Sheriff’s Office said.<\/p>\n
Police found their bodies after responding to a home in a neighborhood just north of the city following a 911 call from a person “who safely exited the residence.”<\/p>\n
Investigators have not released a motive for the mayhem, and autopsies were scheduled Tuesday for all three people.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the San Francisco PD was trying to absorb the loss.<\/p>\n
“The tragic loss of retired Deputy Chief Ann Mannix, her daughter Katie, and retired Sergeant Kevin Mannix in a suspected murder-suicide has left our entire SFPD family reeling,” the San Francisco Police Officers Association said in a statement<\/a> posted online. “There are no words that can fully capture the depth of this tragedy, nor are there simple answers to the painful questions we are all asking.”<\/p>\n Kevin Mannix worked for the SFPD for 27 years before retiring from the department in 2018 with the rank of sergeant, according to the department.<\/a><\/p>\n But it was his wife who left the biggest mark on the department.<\/p>\n A fourth-generation San Franciscan with several relatives who had previously worked as police officers, Ann Mannix joined the SFPD in 1986, a little over a decade after it started to hire women as patrol officers, the San Francisco Chronicle<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n Ann Mannix rose steadily through the ranks, from lieutenant in 2003 to commander in 2015 and to deputy chief in 2018.<\/p>\n Before retiring in 2021, she led the field operations and special operations bureaus, the police department said in a statement. And she was the first woman to be part of and later lead the SWAT team.<\/p>\n
