Meyer/Bay Area News Group)

Expand

Last weekend’s grand opening events drew a strong crowd, earning the new venue some good buzz on social media. The large area allows it to feel busy without being crowded, though I’m sure some mornings — it opens at 8 a.m. — it might feel a little deserted. Mornings may be the best time for parents to bring their little ones to have the run of the Clubhouse area, with different activities aimed at kids every weekday from 10 a.m. to noon in the space, which includes a playground and a sandbox.

Still, there should be enough going on to keep a steady stream of visitors flowing through most days and evenings. SPARK Social is partnering with one of its Creekside neighbors, RFRD Academy, on Bark at SPARK: Howl-O-Ween on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. with dog-centric activities including a costume contest and parade (along with $10 micheladas for the dog owners). There’s also a Sunday morning fitness event with outdoor classes for yoga, Pilates, meditation and more. The full schedule and food truck lineups are available at www.visitsparksocial.com/san-jose.

The Creekside District now includes a Hapa’s beer garden, Preservation Action Council’s Found SJ store, Good Karma Bikes, Bay Padel and Local Color’s Guadalupe Studios. It’s all been well curated by real estate firm Jamestown to make up for what was supposed to be a thriving part of Google’s Downtown West project — which continues to be “timeline challenged,” to put it nicely. Jamestown has put together a good mix of tenants and kept the focus mostly local.

Complementing the more seasoned Little Italy district and San Pedro Square to the east of SAP Center, SPARK Social gives Creekside a legitimate destination that visitors can count on for a food truck or activity seven days a week. And that’s the idea, SPARK Social San Jose owner Carlos Muela told me last week.

“In most cities, if you go to the big sporting venues, that’s where you’ll find things to do even if there’s not a game,” he said. “That’s what we want to do in San Jose.”

MUSICAL MIRACLE: Country music artist Nick Tayler is performing a pair of free shows at West Valley College in Saratoga on Thursday that demonstrate odds are sometimes made to be beaten.

Growing up surrounded by music in Nashville, Tayler was born completely deaf in his right ear — which would create a challenge for anyone seeking a future in music. Tayler overcame his challenge and used it to his advantage to develop a raw, emotional voice. He also found a collaborator in lyricist Henry Evans, a quadriplegic and mute songwriter who uses eye-tracking technology to write his lyrics — for which Tayler writes the music.

The College of Adaptive Arts and West Valley College have joined together to bring the pair to West Valley’s Kirkorian Pavilion for concerts at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. There also will be performances from West Valley student and opera singer Audrey Walker and CAA student Nathalie Montes de Oca. The performances are free, but you need to RSVP at tinyurl.com/wvc-oct15.

“Nick and Henry remind us that talent is never limited by disability,” said Nicole Kim, executive director of the College of Adaptive Arts. “Their partnership demonstrates what becomes possible when people are given the opportunity to share their gifts, collaborate with one another, and be recognized for their abilities instead of limitations.”

TRIBUTE TO A STAR: While the film folks at the Stanford Theatre in Palo Alto are busy putting together the fall program, the movie palace will showcase the talents of a true Hollywood legend, Eva Marie Saint, who died Oct. 6 at 102. On Oct. 16-18 and again Oct. 23-25, the Stanford will show a double-feature of Saint’s two most famous roles, her debut co-starring with Marlon Brando in 1954’s “On the Waterfront” and her leading role sparring with Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock’s “North By Northwest” from 1959.
