Firefighters raced to contain a brush fire<\/a> that erupted in Brentwood early Wednesday morning, just as the region prepares for a round of Santa Ana winds<\/a> that could create wildfire conditions. <\/p>\n

The flames broke out around 2:50 a.m. near Vandergrift Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department<\/a>. <\/p>\n

Firefighters attacked the blaze from the ground and air, preventing it from spreading beyond about 1.5 acres. Crews halted its forward progress within an hour.<\/p>\n

Southern California is bracing for a return of soaring temperatures and powerful Santa Ana winds, prompting a Red Flag Warning as the threat of wildfires intensifies.<\/p>\n

Wind gusts could reach 40 to 70 mph in areas particularly prone to strong winds. Conditions are expected to worsen Thursday, with the most powerful gusts forecast for Friday.<\/p>\n

Thousands of Malibu residents could face power outages as early as Thursday as Southern California Edison prepares for these conditions. <\/p>\n

City officials said Tuesday that the utility is considering shutting off electricity to four circuits serving Malibu \u2014 Cuthbert, Galahad, Maguire and Merlin \u2014 beginning at midnight on Oct. 15.<\/p>\n

This measure is known as a Public Safety Power Shutoff and it\u2019s designed to reduce the risk of electrical equipment sparking wildfires during periods of extreme fire danger.<\/p>\n
