Netflix is laying off about 1,000 employees, or roughly 6% of its workforce, in what would be the streaming giant’s largest round of job cuts to date, it was reported Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The layoffs will primarily affect employees in the company’s product, technology, legal and human resources departments, according to Variety, which obtained an internal email sent Wednesday morning by Netflix co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters.<\/p>\n
“Our mission — to entertain the world — is ambitious, and delivering on it requires us to be disciplined about where we prioritize our people and resources,” the executives wrote in the memo.<\/p>\n
The company said the reductions are part of organizational changes intended to focus resources on areas considered critical to its growth.<\/p>\n
“Our business is strong and growing, and we remain on track to deliver our full year forecast,” Sarandos and Peters wrote.<\/p>\n
Netflix did not immediately respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n
Netflix had approximately 16,000 full-time employees at the end of 2025.<\/p>\n
The layoffs come despite continued revenue and profit growth for the company, which reported $45.2 billion in revenue in 2025, a 16% increase from the previous year, and net income of $11 billion, up 26%, according to Variety.<\/p>\n
For 2026, Netflix has projected revenue of $51 billion to $51.4 billion, representing growth of 13% to 14%.<\/p>\n
The latest cuts are the company’s largest to date, surpassing layoffs in 2022 that eliminated approximately 450 positions after Netflix reported its first quarterly subscriber decline in more than a decade.<\/p>\n
Netflix also eliminated several dozen positions in its global product team earlier this year.<\/p>\n
The company is scheduled to report its third-quarter earnings Tuesday, Oct. 20, after the stock market closes.<\/p>\n
In their memo, Sarandos and Peters acknowledged the effect of the layoffs on employees and said company leaders would be contacting affected workers.<\/p>\n
