(KABC) &#8212; Powerful surf is <a class=\"zZygg UbGlr iFzkS qdXbA WCDhQ DbOXS tqUtK GpWVU iJYzE \" data-testid=\"prism-linkbase\" href=\"https:\/\/abc7.com\/post\/crystal-cove-coastal-bluff-cracks-laguna-beach-prompt-pch-lane-closure\/19936531\/\" target=\"_blank\" dir=\"ltr\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">accelerating coastal erosion<\/a> in south Orange County, where officials are taking steps to protect vulnerable shoreline areas ahead of a potentially powerful El Ni\u00f1o.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">About 9,000 cubic yards of sand is being brought to Capistrano Beach, where erosion has destroyed a parking lot, put train service at risk and left homes on the brink of collapse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cThe whole coast of Orange County is really under siege right now,\u201d said Katrina Foley, Orange County&#8217;s Fifth District supervisor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">The concerns extend beyond Capistrano Beach. A bluff at Crystal Cove State Park has developed cracks just yards from Pacific Coast Highway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Blair Conklin, a local skimboarder, surfer and content creator, said he noticed brown sediment in the water while driving along Pacific Coast Highway over the weekend. He said he then spotted the cracks in the cliff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cYesterday it was actively eroding where I saw parts of the cliff fall into the water,\u201d Conklin said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cIt just seems like it\u2019s consistently eroding every day, and that\u2019s the problem,\u201d he added. \u201cWith how much swell we have in the water even for the next couple of weeks, it\u2019s probably going to continue to happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">Caltrans said it is working with State Parks and the Coastal Commission to assess the area and determine the most effective path forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">For Conklin, the wave conditions that began as ideal surfing conditions have become a source of concern for the coastline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"EkqkG IGXmU nlgHS yuUao lqtkC TjIXL aGjvy \">\u201cIt\u2019s pretty sad and devastating to see a lot of these places that we enjoy completely changing and maybe for good, you know,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright \u00a9 2026 KABC Television, LLC.
