A visiting committee conducts an on-site evaluation to see if a school is eligible to receive a formal recognition of their effectiveness, integrity, and trustworthiness and their commitment to continuous self-improvement. This includes having qualified teachers, a strong academic curriculum, and a safe learning environment. The next major WASC evaluation comes up for the 2026–2027 school year, as the school’s current accreditation approaches its expiration. CHS last underwent a WASC progress validation in 2020.

A committee of WASC representatives visit to examine a comprehensive document prepared by the school that serves as a self-written evaluation. The components include student demographics, test scores, and an action plan that outlines the goals the school sets for the future. It also includes how the school addressed recommendations left by WASC the last time they visited. The committee also observes live classes and interviews teachers and students. At the end of their visit, they provide feedback and recommendations for the school that helps it refine its action plan for improvement in the future. Ultimately, the committee physically comes to the school to verify that what is written down in the school’s reports is authentic to what goes on in the classrooms. WASC accreditation is crucial as it validifies the ability of CHS to hand out prestigious diplomas, transfer academic credits, and it keeps CHS highly competitive.

Coronado’s WASC Coordinator for the upcoming evaluation is CHS Spanish Teacher Polly Vella. Vella was appointed as coordinator by school administration, as she has demonstrated the responsibility necessary to fulfill this role. “We have to share data of all kinds about how our students are performing and if the school is providing a solid education to the population,” Vella said. “We’re reviewing data and then we write about [it] and ultimately every school is supposed to be working on continuous improvement. We have to reflect on if we have met [our] goals.” As a WASC Coordinator, Vella will be responsible for communicating amongst Coronado faculty about the upcoming evaluation, leading the committee of WASC representatives when they visit the school, and contributing to the intensive self-study reports that show the school’s implementation of previous recommendations left by WASC.

Mathematics Teacher Garret Newell has joined the CHS faculty this academic year, but has had previous experience as an educator. “I think [CHS] is a safe learning environment, every teacher I’ve met or I’ve seen teach seems very competent. As far as the curriculum, I don’t know a [lot] about it, but from what I know in the math department, it seems like a pretty standard curriculum,” Newell said. “ [Although, one way the school stands out is how] there is a lot of AP offerings here, which shows how we are trying to push kids and prepare for college.”

Freshman Santiago Goya is new to the high school this academic year, but has previously spent time as a student in the Coronado Unified School District. “I think that our school has a strong academic program, and I think that they encourage learning in a lot of different fields and interests,” Goya said. “I think our school has struggled in the past with making a safe learning environment [for students,] and there are areas we can improve in. I hope to see improvements in how the school gives aid to students with special needs.”

Junior Isabella Irvin has been at CHS for three years, and therefore has had time to experience the classes CHS offers first hand. “The only classes that challenge students are the AP classes,” Irvin said when asked about how she feels about the status of the academic curriculum offered by the school. “I feel like we [need] more challenging classes, and we should make it harder.” Irvin represents the importance of the perspective of students who desire a more challenging education outside of the Advanced Placement classrooms.

As the committee of visiting WASC representatives prepares to arrive on campus, Coronado High School’s focus extends past a simple checklist. It is understood by students and by faculty that the upcoming evaluation can not rely on administration alone to be successful, but the collective voice of the entire Coronado student community and the dedication reflected by the people inside the classrooms.

VOL. 14, NO. 4 – Oct. 14, 2026

Coronado High School has been polishing its curriculum in preparation for the opening of its doors to outside…

[28
33207,74,76,75
post-496569","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-diego","tag-islander_times","tag-san-diego","tag-san-diego-headlines","tag-san-diego-news
["GET
