SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — Relics of St. Francis of Assisi are on display at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption in San Francisco, marking the first time the collection has traveled outside Italy.<\/p>\n

The exhibit, unveiled Wednesday, features several paintings and other religious artifacts, including an item containing the saint’s blood. Organizers say the display commemorates nearly 800 years of Franciscan history and highlights the connection between San Francisco and its namesake saint.<\/p>\n

“It’s incredible that it’s in our city,” said Angela Alioto, founder of the Knights of St. Francis. “And I absolutely believe it’s in our city because we’re the city of Saint Francis.”<\/p>\n

Alioto said securing approval to bring the relics to the United States was a lengthy and challenging process. She said the exhibit carries special significance for both San Franciscans and the Italian community.<\/p>\n

Father Saul Tambini said the display offers an opportunity to recognize St. Francis’ lasting influence on the region.<\/p>\n

“We have to celebrate St. Francis because we know how much the Franciscan presence deeply shaped this place,” Tambini said.<\/p>\n

Visitors attending the exhibit described the experience as both culturally and spiritually meaningful.<\/p>\n

“It was something that I never thought I’d get a chance to see,” said Tina Holl. “I’ve never been to Assisi.”<\/p>\n

The relics will remain in San Francisco for six weeks and can be viewed free of charge. Organizers say the exhibit is open to the public and intended to welcome visitors of all backgrounds.<\/p>\n

Mayor Daniel Lurie said the display reflects the enduring relationship between San Francisco and Italy.<\/p>\n

Public viewing officially begins Friday.<\/p>\n
