A formal ribbon cutting Thursday morning marked the completion of a renovation of West Sacramento’s Heritage Oaks Park.<\/p>\n

A big part of the renovation was a dedicated theme to pay homage to tribal leaders throughout the region.<\/p>\n

“It’s a huge deal,” said Kate Smith, West Sacramento’s Director of Parks & Recreation. “We worked with tribal representatives on this park.”<\/p>\n

Wilton Rancheria, Yoche Dehe Wintun Nation and Shingle Springs Rancheria worked with the City.<\/p>\n

The new theme includes an oak tree playground structure with a wise man’s face, a sleeping deer and a squirrel within the trunk of the structure.<\/p>\n

A new, separate spray pad includes a canoe and teepee structure, as well as other tribal and wildlife figures.<\/p>\n

There is also a BMX skills course crafted in a corner of the park, located at 1300 Lake Washington Boulevard.<\/p>\n

In 2022, the California Department of Parks and Recreation awarded the city a $3 million Land and Water Conservation Fund grant to help pay for the nearly $8 million design and construction project.<\/p>\n

The community is invited to a much larger celebration, Party in the Park, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.<\/p>\n
