Construction on the Vincent Thomas Bridge will require five overnight closures of southbound State Route 47 between Ferry Street and Harbor Boulevard from Sunday, Oct. 18, to Oct. 23.<\/p>\n
The closures are needed as part of the preparation for the full 16-month closure of the bridge that will begin at midnight on Nov. 7. The California Department of Transportation will replace the bridge road deck during that full closure, which will run until February 2028.<\/p>\n
The overnight closures will occur from 10:45 p.m. to 6:45 a.m. Sunday through Friday, blocking all westerly travel across the bridge toward the 110 Freeway.<\/p>\n
Because of weather or operational factors, the schedule is subject to change, including dates and times, the number of closures, and other details. Motorists should expect delays when utilizing the Vincent Thomas Bridge and use Caltrans Quickmap<\/a> to review current traffic conditions before traveling. Caltrans reminds drivers to exercise increased caution near the closure and \u201cSlow for the Cone Zone.\u201d<\/p>\n The overnight, preliminary closures will allow for working platforms and structural bracing beneath the roadway to be installed, both of which are needed for the upcoming 16-month re-decking project.<\/p>\n During the overnight work, the Ferry Street on-ramp to southbound SR-47 will also be closed. Traffic will be detoured via northbound SR-47 to SR-103 before diverting west on Pacific Coast Highway to the 110 Freeway.<\/p>\n The $752.8 million Vincent Thomas Bridge Deck Replacement Project is deemed a critical infrastructure project requiring a full closure once it begins. The bridge has been in use since 1963 and is expected to be replaced over the next 10 or so years, with planning and funding efforts now underway for that larger project.<\/p>\n
