A brush fire off Interstate 5 near San Onofre, near an already-burning blaze at Camp Pendleton, prompted the entire freeway to be shut down for hours in North County on Friday, the California Highway Patrol reported.<\/p>\n
Northbound I-5 reopened to traffic around 4:30 p.m. at Vandegrift Boulevard, the CHP reported. However, southbound traffic from Basilone Road remained closed as crews finished cleaning flame retardant off the freeway.<\/p>\n
The freeway closure came shortly after a vehicle on a semi-truck vehicle hauler caught on fire around 11 a.m. south of the CHP freeway checkpoint, and the flames spread to nearby brush, according to CHP. Dubbed the Scales fire, the blaze had burned 20 acres by 2 p.m., according to Cal Fire.<\/p>\n
State parks officers evacuated campers from a nearby San Onofre campground.<\/p>\n
The blaze was burning near the Henderson fire on Camp Pendleton. That fire, which started Thursday, scorched 2,080 acres and also prompted a full freeway closure for about an hour during Thursday\u2019s evening rush hour. Crews had declared zero containment by Friday afternoon.<\/p>\n
The CHP reported on X Friday that there were \u201cactive flames on both sides of the freeway.\u201d<\/p>\n
Motorists couldn\u2019t catch a break Friday afternoon. With I-5 closed through Camp Pendleton, Interstate 15 is the alternate route. But according to SigAlert.com, the traffic headed north on I-15 between about Miramar and Murrieta was crawling at slower than 15 mph.<\/p>\n
Amtrak Surfliner trains were also suspended Friday due to the heavy smoke and flames.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe (Henderson Fire) remains active and continues to spread, with fire crossing containment lines on the northwest side,\u201d Cal Fire reported about 11 a.m. Friday. \u201cAir and ground resources remain engaged in suppression efforts, with additional resources en route.\u201d<\/p>\n
Some crews assigned to the Henderson fire have been reassigned to the Scales fire, according to Cal Fire.<\/p>\n
Firefighters on the San Onofre incident were battling the blaze in 95-degree heat, with 25 mph gusts pushing flames to the southwest, said National Weather Service meteorologist Miguel Miller.<\/p>\n
Higher into the hills, closer to the Henderson fire, Miller said the flames were being propelled by gusts reaching as high as 44 mph.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a slow and gradual decrease, and the wind is still going to be blowing pretty good all evening and all night,\u201d Miller said. \u201cBut it\u2019s just going to be a slow, gradual decrease through Saturday morning.\u201d<\/p>\n
