(KFSN) — As Breast Cancer Awareness Month continues, a Fresno woman is sharing her experience with breast cancer and encouraging others to prioritize regular screenings.

Corazon Magno was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year after undergoing routine mammograms. Because cancer runs in her family, Magno said she began getting mammograms at age 35.

“My feeling at that time I was just so numb,” Magno said.

She said a routine screening this year led doctors to identify a concerning finding.

Magno said the cancer was detected early. She underwent a lumpectomy and is now cancer-free. She emphasized the importance of screening and early diagnosis.

“It’s early detection, and that really matters before it gets out of hand and then you go through all that process,” Magno said.

Doctors at cCARE Cancer Center say they are seeing a decline in mammograms locally and are urging women to stay current on recommended screenings.

“We are seeing far more advanced cancer than we have in the past. I do think that there is a subset population of women that are younger that are presenting with breast cancer. I would encourage everybody to start their screening mammogram at age 40,” said Dr. Dawn Johnson, a breast surgeon at cCARE Cancer Center.

Dr. Cassandra Anderson, a surgical oncologist, said many of the more serious cases providers are seeing could potentially be identified earlier through routine screening.

“Patients with inflammatory breast cancer, cancer that has spread and has big, bulky nodal disease that is causing pain that can all be avoided with an annual mammogram,” Dr. Anderson said. She went on to add “We want to stress the importance of screening and not having advanced age disease. What we’re seeing is more advanced age disease, not necessarily younger patients, just people not getting screened.”

They also encourage anyone who discovers a breast mass to seek medical evaluation.

“Don’t presume that it’s something that you don’t have to worry about. Even if you had a normal mammogram, you still need to have it evaluated,” Dr. Johnson said.

The message comes as cCARE Cancer Center prepares for its fourth annual Women’s Cancer Walk. Organizers say the event is intended to bring the community together in support of people affected by breast and gynecological cancers.

“It’s been really rewarding seeing our community come together and support one another,” said Ashley Maes, cCARE physician and community relations manager.

The event will feature a leisurely two-mile morning walk at the Art of Healing Garden at Woodward Park. Maes said the walk provides an opportunity for reflection and support.

“It’s just a time to come together, celebrate women and to just kind of reflect on, you know, those that have had to deal with either breast cancer or gynecological cancer,” Maes said.

The walk is open to the public and is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24.

For news updates, follow Danyelle Burke North on Instagram and TikTok.

Copyright © 2026 KFSN-TV.
