Just one win stands between Nashville SC and regular-season glory.

The Boys in Gold, with five matches still to play in the 2026 MLS regular season, sit 14 points clear atop the Supporters’ Shield table ahead of their Saturday night trip to San Jose, seeking the final three points to ensure home-field advantage throughout the MLS Cup Playoffs. Nashville SC enters Saturday’s match on the back of four consecutive wins and two straight four-goal games, looking to complete a trifecta of victories in a week against Western Conference foes.

      Key Storylines

The highest of highs and lowest of lows

Like many of its Western Conference competitors, San Jose’s 2026 has been a season of opposites. Where the likes of St. Louis and Houston accelerated from slow starts into the cream of the conference after the summer break, San Jose churned to a halt after an explosive open. The Earthquakes were well within the Supporters’ Shield race through much of the spring before falling apart in May, going five games with a solitary win to usher in the FIFA World Cup hiatus. San Jose then played eight games without tasting victory once MLS resumed in July, tumbling down the league table before stabilizing in September.

It’s safe to say, then, that this is a much different team now than Nashville might have expected this spring. The keys to both teams’ victory remain the same, though: the performances of San Jose star striker Preston Judd, former UEFA Champions League-winning forward Timo Werner and breakout midfielder Niko Tsakiris. That trio of players account for 47 combined goal involvements, including 15 goals for Judd and 11 assists for Tsakiris. Nashville’s top attacking trio — Cristian Espinoza, Hany Mukhtar and Sam Surridge — have accounted for 60.

The Earthquakes have some of the league’s best players in their positions, yes, but as their recent form has shown, they’re inconsistent: equally as likely to win six in a row (as they did to open the year) as surrender five at home to 13th-placed Minnesota. Nashville must thus be prepared for a multitude of possibilities: a leaky defense its talented forward line can exploit, or a nightmare assignment from its offensive stars that Nashville’s league-leading back line will have to ace.

You could make a compelling case that Nashville’s offseason acquisition of Espinoza as a Designated Player was the most astute move of any team. The likes of Antoine Griezmann to Orlando, Robert Lewandowski to Chicago or James Rodriguez to Minnesota may have stolen more headlines, but the Boys in Gold’s new No. 7 has been nothing short of a revelation. His 14 assists in 2026 place him second among all MLS players and first among head coach B.J. Callaghan’s group, starting on the right flank for the runaway Supporters’ Shield leaders.

San Jose will not be so keen to see Espinoza thrive, however. Before his winter shift, Espinoza spent six individually impressive yet collectively unsuccessful seasons in Northern California with the Earthquakes, earning a pair of MLS All-Star nods en route to the club’s all-time assist lead. The Argentine was arguably the most underrated player in the whole league in that span, developing a wand of a right foot that wrought havoc on others even if his own team struggled. And once he became a free agent after last season ended, the Boys in Gold snapped him up, recognizing the devastating impact he could have when partnered with Mukhtar, Surridge, right back Andy Najar and the rest of Nashville’s attacking options. As his decisive goal in the Concacaf Champions Cup Round of 16 at Miami, decisive assist in the quarterfinals at Club America and corner for Maxwell Woledzi’s winner at Red Bull New York, among others, prove, that decision was an astute one.

Espinoza’s return to San Jose on Saturday may thus be a tad bittersweet. The potential to clinch the Supporters’ Shield and play an integral role in one of the most dominant MLS seasons ever will be front-of-mind for the star winger. But the story of clinching history at his former home, in front of thousands of fans who formerly cheered his name, where he never lifted silverware, will likely occupy a spot as well.

It’s no exaggeration to say that Saturday’s match could be the most consequential Nashville has ever played. The 2025 U.S. Open Cup final secured its first trophy, its trips to Miami and Mexico City in the Concacaf Champions Cup this spring moved it toward continental glory and a series of league contests throughout the year have cemented this group as one of its best-ever sides. But for the first and so far only time this year, the Boys in Gold can get their hands on an MLS trophy with a result at PayPal Park.

The scenarios are extensive, but the gist is simple: three points from any of Nashville’s five remaining games secures them the Supporters’ Shield title, awarded to the best team in the MLS regular season. A draw or loss could be enough, too, should their nearest competitors — Vancouver, St. Louis, Dallas, Miami and Chicago — drop points in the right order. But the Boys in Gold have shown throughout the year that they don’t wait for others to slip up; they want to seize their own fate and win on their terms. Should they do so again on the West Coast, their plane home will have a glistening new passenger.

      Series History & What’s Next

Nashville and San Jose own one of the odder all-time series in league history. The clubs have played four times before and scored four goals each, but all the previous meetings have ended in ties. The most recent came in April 2024, a 1-1 draw at GEODIS Park featuring a Mukhtar goal.

After a spell of three games in eight days, Nashville takes a weeklong break before hitting the road for a match at CF Montréal, scheduled for lunchtime on Saturday, Oct. 24. Their penultimate match at GEODIS Park occurs the following Wednesday against a red-hot Philadelphia Union, the reigning Supporters’ Shield champions.

Nashville SC vs. San Jose Earthquakes 2026 MLS Regular Season | Matchday 33 Saturday, October 17 | 9:30…

[29
193659,88,90,89,193658
post-498951","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-jose","tag-match-news-preview","tag-san-jose","tag-san-jose-headlines","tag-san-jose-news","tag-sjvsnsh-10-17-2026
["GET
