Orange County’s Pride parade and festival returned to downtown Santa Ana on Saturday, reviving a vibrant public celebration of LGBTQ identity as advocates continue to face local restrictions and efforts to overturn marriage equality.

""The October 10 event, themed “Our Voices All Combined,” marked a departure from its previous two years at the OC Fair & Event Center in Costa Mesa. Organizers indicated that the move was in direct response to a strong community desire for a free and visible celebration in the heart of Santa Ana.

“They really wanted Pride to be out in the streets. They wanted it to be free. They wanted it to be visible,” said OC Pride Executive Director Bryan Terry in an interview with LAist.

OC Pride shifted to the fairgrounds in 2024, citing the festival’s growth, budget pressures, and security concerns. Santa Ana had hosted the downtown celebration for more than a decade prior to the change.

This year, Kanan Durham, executive director of Pride at the Pier, served as the community grand marshal. Durham’s organization promotes LGBTQ civil rights and civic participation in Orange County. OC Pride announced his selection ahead of the parade.

""Pride at the Pier was founded in 2023 after Huntington Beach enacted restrictions on the display of Pride flags by city government. In response, organizers held a gathering that May, carrying a large homemade Progress Pride flag to the end of the pier. Since its inception, the group has broadened its focus to include voter education, coalition building, and encouraging LGBTQ residents to engage in local governance.

In Huntington Beach, where all seven council members support former President Donald Trump and a conservative agenda, the LGBTQ community has faced significant pushback against the council’s policies, including Pride flag restrictions. Mayor Casey McKeon has defended the council’s actions as a reflection of the city’s conservative values, as reported by KQED.

Nationally, marriage equality remains protected by the Supreme Court’s 2015 ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges, despite ongoing campaigns to reverse it. Former Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis petitioned the court to overturn that precedent while appealing a judgment related to her refusal to issue marriage licenses to a same-sex couple. The justices rejected her petition on November 10, 2025.

""Efforts to undermine marriage equality continue through state legislative proposals and calls for reconsideration. Justice Clarence Thomas explicitly urged the court to revisit Obergefell in his separate concurrence in the 2022 decision that overturned federal abortion protections. His stance, however, did not affect marriage law.

The federal Respect for Marriage Act mandates recognition of valid same-sex marriages across state lines but does not require individual states to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples if Obergefell were ever overruled, leaving the constitutional guarantee central to nationwide marriage equality intact.
