Two men are in the hospital following a shooting outside a nightclub in Fresno’s Tower District.<\/p>\n
The shooting happened at 12:17 a.m. Sunday, outside the MIA nightclub near Olive Avenue and Broadway Street.<\/p>\n
Fresno police say at least 12 officers who were patrolling the area heard nine gunshots.<\/p>\n
In a news conference Sunday, Fresno Police Chief Mindy Casto said video shows a fight between two groups when one man pulled out a gun and fired.<\/p>\n
When the nearby officers arrived, two found men suffering from gunshot wounds. One was shot in the upper body, the other in the lower body.<\/p>\n
Both were taken to the hospital and are expected to survive. One of the victims was an innocent bystander waiting to get into the nightclub when the gunfire rang out.<\/p>\n
“We do have to take a hard look at what are the practices that are contributing to this or not?” Casto said. “This particular shooting, of all the video that we’ve poured through, there appears to be no connection from the suspect to any of the businesses in the Tower.”<\/p>\n
Chief Casto said detectives have already recovered the gun used in the shooting.<\/p>\n
No suspect has been taken into custody but Casto said the shooter was with a couple of friends and police are working to identify them. The chief also said she expects an arrest to be made soon.<\/p>\n
Police say a woman also injured her ankle during the incident and was taken to the hospital.<\/p>\n
MIA nightclub addressed the shooting in a social media post<\/a>, saying in part: “It’s time to stand together, fight back against the violence and take our community back. Not with more division, but with unity, accountability and action.”<\/p>\n The investigation remains ongoing.<\/p>\n
