SANTA CLARA — Of all the surprises, both good and bad, for the San Francisco 49ers in 2026, one stands out above the rest:

The defensive line.

It’s not even particularly close.

The 49ers broke training camp in August with nine defensive linemen. Six immediately broke down, followed shortly by their backups. In all, the Niners have marched 17 different defensive linemen onto the practice field this regular season, pulling warm bodies off the street, off opposing practice squads and, frankly, out of their backside.

Yet they haven’t just survived this medical comedy of errors; they’ve assembled a legitimate top-10 unit amid this chaos.

Against all football logic, disorder has become their greatest weapon.

Monday night’s slugfest against the Washington Commanders was the case in point.

Washington held the ball for 44 snaps and 224 yards in the second half while San Francisco scraped together a pitiful 19 plays for 72 yards. By every conventional metric, the Niners got thoroughly outplayed. They should have lost.

Instead, San Francisco’s defensive front flipped the script.

They hammered former Offensive Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels with nine brutal hits, turning clean pockets into claustrophobic panic rooms. The front four didn’t just save the evening; they stole the win.

So much credit needs to go to first-year defensive coordinator Raheem Morris.

When Kyle Shanahan hired Morris, everyone knew the defense needed a facelift after cycling through four coordinators in four years. Morris benched the static, line-up-and-whip-the-man-across-from-you philosophy that governed Santa Clara for a decade.

His defense is an aggressive, caffeine-fueled circus of simulated pressures, mugged-up gaps and synchronized loops.

The greatest revelation in this process, though, is line coach Kris Kocurek.

Kocurek has long treated the Wide-9 like a holy scripture: Tilt the edge, plant your cleat and run through the tackle’s throat. Penetrate at all costs. Lateral movement used to be treated like an insult to the profession.

Yet here’s Kocurek, tossing aside his beloved fastball to throw filthy changeups and knuckleballs with guys who don’t even know where the team cafeteria is yet. It’s the finest coaching job of his well-lauded career.

Of course, scheme is just squiggly lines without violence, which brings us to Keion White.

When the 49ers traded for White last season, fans groaned because he wasn’t a billboard name. Yet all White has done since arriving in Santa Clara is play winning football, chewing up double-teams and detonating protection schemes to free everyone else.

Combine White with the recently returned Mykel Williams, and the front suddenly boasts two force-multipliers. And the 49ers’ opponents have felt that force.

Remember: Williams’ torn ACL in Week 9 last season sent then-coordinator Robert Saleh into a self-preserving turtle shell — he had job interviews, after all; he needed schematic plausible deniability.

But now that Williams is back, he’s hunting again. Daniels found out the hard way on a crucial second-quarter scramble, watching Williams track him down across the grass like an apex predator on an open savanna.

Those two ends have completely unlocked fourth-round rookie Romello Height.

Height has zero interest or, truth be told, capability in defending the run, which is fine, because he was drafted for one solitary reason: getting the quarterback. Playing with a club on his broken right hand, Height logged four hits on Daniels and split the game-sealing sack on a three-man rush.

Throw in Osa Odighizuwa collapsing the pocket, rookie Gracen Halton living in opposing backfields and Sebastian Valdez doing the dirty work, and this 49ers’ interior line is downright nasty, too.

Valdez represents the epitome of this improvised outfit.

The undrafted defensive tackle spent over a calendar year rotting on the practice squad, getting cut and ignored by the entire NFL. In the old Wide-9, he was an odd fit; in Morris’ stunt-heavy crash-test derby, his natural leverage and immovable lower half make him a bowling ball crashing through the pins.

Valdez won’t have his jersey sold at the team store, but he reliably blows up interior pass protections so edge rushers can eat. Plus, he can hold up against the run.

The 49ers brought him in because they had run out of defensive tackles before their Week 3 game. All he’s done since then is become indispensable.

Isn’t it perfect?

Football romanticizes the high-priced superstars and the pristine five-year blueprints.

Shanahan and John Lynch didn’t script this defensive front on a pristine whiteboard over organic smoothies. It’s held together by athletic tape, smelling salts, and mutual desperation.

Yet as Kocurek stalks the sideline barking through shredded vocal cords, watching castoffs execute violence with the precision of a choir, you realize what this front really is. It’s a ruthless, junkyard marvel.

It’s a game-wrecker of the highest order.

And it’s a massive reason why the Niners are 6-0 and looking like the NFL’s team to beat.

[30
402,12268,181,752,101,296,103,102,104,106,105,127,1326
post-502001","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-francisco","tag-inside-sports","tag-inside-the-san-francisco-49ers","tag-latest-headlines","tag-nfl","tag-san-francisco","tag-san-francisco-49ers","tag-san-francisco-headlines","tag-san-francisco-news","tag-sf","tag-sf-headlines","tag-sf-news","tag-sports","tag-sports-columnists
["GET
