SANTA CLARA \u2014 How many seasons have the 49ers already played in 2026<\/a>?<\/p>\n

Because this 6-0 start to the Niners\u2019 campaign has already crammed in a decade\u2019s worth of trauma.<\/p>\n

And Monday<\/a>? Well, that might have been the moment the dam broke<\/a>.<\/p>\n

San Francisco has survived the injury gods\u2019 endless wrath from the start of training camp, and they have been able to do that for many reasons, but none is bigger than the fact that Mike Evans was out there acting as a 6-foot-5 human shield.<\/p>\n

So what do the Niners look like without him?<\/p>\n

Evans has soaked up 39 targets on the year. Every other 49ers wide receiver \u2014 active, limping or already cut \u2014 has combined for 40.<\/p>\n

He wasn\u2019t merely the top option. He was the only wide receiver option Brock Purdy looked at without flinching.<\/p>\n

Then came the 1:10 mark of the second quarter against Washington. Evans limped off with an Achilles injury that the team insists is a week-old tweak, but Troy Aikman called a season-long ticking clock on the broadcast.<\/p>\n

How long Evans has been dealing with the injury isn\u2019t the important part, though. It\u2019s how long he will need to be sidelined.<\/p>\n

Because while the 49ers punched in a score five snaps after Evans\u2019 exit to lead 20-3 at the break, that was the end of the Niners\u2019 offensive success.<\/p>\n

Across the entire second half, the 49ers scored two field goals. Their wide receivers earned exactly one target.<\/p>\n

One! A Brandin Cooks catch off a quick three-step slant in the third quarter.<\/p>\n

Purdy simply didn\u2019t look his receivers\u2019 way. George Kittle and Christian McCaffrey were peppered. Jordan Watkins, Jacob Cowing and Cooks were ignored \u2014 they were window dressing at best.<\/p>\n

Washington noticed.<\/p>\n

In the first half, with Evans on the field, Washington sent extra pressure on one single play.<\/p>\n

In the second half, they brought 11 blitzes.<\/p>\n

Dan Quinn and his staff weren\u2019t suddenly struck by a surge of bravado. They simply realized the boogeyman was in the locker room and he wasn\u2019t coming back out.<\/p>\n

With Evans on the grass, you can\u2019t blitz Purdy because you already know where the ball is landing, and no one can stop it, even with a double-team.<\/p>\n

Without Evans, Washington scanned the rest of the 49ers\u2019 receiver room and turned up the blowtorch.<\/p>\n

The Commanders\u2019 sideline basically delivered an ultimatum: We know you don\u2019t trust these guys \u2014 prove us wrong.<\/p>\n

Purdy\u2019s answer in the game was devastatingly honest, even if his post-game response wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

\u201cSecond half, I thought they did a good job being disruptive, taking checkdowns away, and sort of making me hold onto the ball,\u201d Purdy admitted. \u201cThat\u2019s still on me on certain plays to get the ball out.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cIt sucks having (Evans) go down, but I believe in the guys that had to step up and make plays for us too. We\u2019ll be good, but we\u2019d love to have him out there.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sure. And I\u2019d love a pay raise.<\/p>\n

George Kittle tried his best to hold the company line, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think we went three-and-out three straight times just because Mike wasn\u2019t out there,\u201d Kittle said. \u201cObviously, he would have helped, but we have to execute, and we didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

But even that couldn\u2019t hold up to even a modicum of scrutiny: \u201cWhen they (blitzed) in the second half, we didn\u2019t have an answer for it and didn\u2019t take advantage of anything,\u201d Kittle said. \u201cOur offense has the capabilities. We\u2019re down to our fifth or sixth wide receiver, but I don\u2019t use that as an excuse.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019s right that it isn\u2019t an excuse. But it is a problem.<\/p>\n

Trent Williams, bless him, has no time for the nonsense: \u201cIt\u2019s a big deal,\u201d he said of Evans\u2019 injury. \u201cI won\u2019t downplay it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t think that Atlanta defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich \u2014 a master of the blitz \u2014 wasn\u2019t taking notes Monday night.<\/p>\n

So with Evans likely to miss Sunday\u2019s early game in Atlanta, where will the Niners turn?<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not as if the Niners have been practicing with Evans the last few weeks. Even with all these reps, Purdy doesn\u2019t want to go to his other guys, who are rarely open and never fully trusted.<\/p>\n

Christian Kirk might suit up next, but he missed all of training camp and has one week of practice under his belt. Expecting instant telepathy between him and Purdy under blitz-heavy fire is pure fantasy.<\/p>\n

Can Watkins find space \u2014 any space? Can Cooks turn back time for one week, just to get the Niners to a Week 8 bye?<\/p>\n

Can Jacob Cowing provide the 49ers something on offense? He\u2019s been a disaster as a punt returner \u2014 legitimately cuttable \u2014 but the Niners don\u2019t seem likely to move on because they need him at receiver.<\/p>\n

Doesn\u2019t that say it all?<\/p>\n

For six weeks, the 49ers have managed to tread water in a hurricane. They have spent two months convincing the football world they can make anything work.<\/p>\n
