Sacramento city leaders are advancing a proposal to regulate electric bikes, scooters, and motorcycles, following a unanimous vote by a city committee on Tuesday. <\/p>\n

Sacramento city leaders are advancing a proposal to regulate electric bikes, scooters, and motorcycles, following a unanimous vote by a city committee on Tuesday. <\/p>\n

The proposal, sponsored by Vice Mayor Karina Talamantes<\/a>, aims to address safety concerns and embed state e-bike laws into a framework tailored to Sacramento.<\/p>\n

Talamantes cited a fourfold increase in e-bike and e-scooter-related visits to the UC Davis Medical Center from 2021 to 2025 as a key reason for the initiative. <\/p>\n

“I hear loud and clear from my constituents and my community that they want the city of Sacramento to do something about this problem,” Talamantes said. “Ultimately, education is the number one priority, but also there needs to be consequences to your actions.” <\/p>\n

The proposal also acknowledges the city\u2019s current lack of staff to enforce existing regulations on illegal e-bike, scooter, and motorcycle use.<\/p>\n

Opinions among residents at the committee meeting were divided.<\/p>\n

Annette Emery, an e-bike rider who attended the meeting, expressed her support for the proposal. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe need to make it safer. I see far too many, especially children, zip through intersections, which is dangerous not just for them, for cars and for other e-bike riders who have been hit,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

Other residents voiced concerns about the proposal. <\/p>\n

One attendee said, “This doesn’t seem to be a prudent use of staff’s time to regulate something that can be better regulated by the state.” <\/p>\n

Another urged the city to “pursue stronger enforcement alongside meaningful investments in safe infrastructure, public education, and consistent helmet use.” <\/p>\n

Despite the mixed opinions, the committee voted unanimously to move the proposal forward. <\/p>\n

The next step involves city staff working on the proposal\u2019s details, including education and enforcement measures, before it is presented to the full council for consideration.<\/p>\n

Talamantes intentionally left the proposal broad to allow city staff to find creative solutions.<\/p>\n
