The union is seeking a 20% pay raise over three years, along with reductions in healthcare costs and changes to telework policies.

Workers are also expected to rally in downtown Sacramento at noon. Employees considered essential are exempt from the walkout.

SEIU last authorized a strike in 2016, but did not go on strike across the state.

The union represents around 100,000 state workers across 140 state departments and agencies, including cooks, custodians, nurses and office staff.

See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter | Find us on YouTube here and subscribe to our channel | Make KCRA a preferred news source in Google

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —LIVE | SEIU 1000 workers march in SacramentoWatch on Thousands of California state workers are walking…

[32
194756,2820,131757,83028,194759,5502,194754,49096,60724,23615,6787,194761,31116,35693,95008,473,194755,34814,1577,21909,191021,121,123,122,45435,98077,180287,194762,180288,194757,184848,2328,194758,71541,194760
post-503393","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-sacramento","tag-20-pay-raise","tag-app","tag-california-state-worker","tag-california-state-workers","tag-california-strike","tag-contract-dispute","tag-contract-disputes","tag-cook","tag-custodian","tag-download","tag-downtown-sacramento","tag-essential-employees","tag-healthcare-cost","tag-healthcare-costs","tag-historic-strike","tag-kcra","tag-may-lee-state-office-complex","tag-new-contract","tag-nurse","tag-office-staff","tag-one-day-strike","tag-sacramento","tag-sacramento-headlines","tag-sacramento-news","tag-seiu","tag-seiu-local-1000","tag-state-contract","tag-state-office-complex","tag-state-workers-strike","tag-telework-policies","tag-telework-policy","tag-union","tag-union-strike","tag-walkout","tag-wednesday-strike
["GET
