After a six-year battle, former Oakland hotel workers are set to receive money owed to them as part of one of the largest wage theft settlements in Oakland.<\/p>\n
Former Radisson workers joined city leaders and supporters at Oakland City Hall on Wednesday to announce the $600,000 settlement.<\/p>\n
Under the settlement, 128 former Radisson hotel workers will receive more than $500,000 in unpaid wages and interest. The remaining $100,000 will go toward legal fees.<\/p>\n
The agreement is between the city of Oakland’s Department of Workplace and Employment Standards and the company that owned the now-closed Radisson Hotel near Oakland San Francisco Bay Airport.<\/p>\n
The case dates back to 2020, when the East Bay Alliance for a Sustainable Economy, known as EBASE, helped workers file complaints alleging wage theft.<\/p>\n
Workers reported working long hours without pay, among other alleged labor violations.<\/p>\n
“With the violation of wage theft came the dehumanization of what it means to be a worker,” EBASE Executive Director Saabir Lockett said. “This is the win about the dignity and honor of standing up, that all work matters and all work has dignity. No matter what you do, you have the right to be treated as a human being and paid fair wages.”<\/p>\n
The settlement is the largest in the history of the Oakland Department of Workplace and Employment Standards.<\/p>\n
NBC Bay Area reached out to the hotel owner for comment but has not yet heard back. <\/p>\n
