According to the National Weather Service, Santa Barbara County bore the brunt of the storm’s initial punch, receiving about an inch of rain early Wednesday morning before the system moved into Ventura and Los Angeles counties.

Forecasters said there was about a 30% to 40% chance of heavier downpours Wednesday night, dropping rain at a rate of three-quarters of an inch per hour. Isolated thunderstorms will also be possible Wednesday night into Thursday.

“Due to the south-facing aspect of the Santa Monica Mountains, that area and the adjacent coastline remains in a flood watch through Thursday,” according to the NWS.

Forecasters noted there is a “potential for rapidly developing thunderstorms and there is still a small risk, around 5%, of a weak tornado.”

Forecasters said overall rainfall totals during the multi-day storm across much of Los Angeles County could average about 1.5 inches, with 2 to 3 inches possible in areas where terrain enhances rainfall and in locations hit by thunderstorms.

A flood watch for the Malibu coast and eastern and western Santa Monica Mountains will be in effect through Thursday afternoon. The watch includes Malibu, Malibu Bowl, Pacific Palisades and Topanga.

Flooding could occur in urban and poor-drainage areas, with extensive street flooding and flooding of creeks and rivers possible, forecasters said.

The storm brought cooler temperatures following several days of unusually hot weather and powerful Santa Ana winds. Wednesday and Thursday were both expected to see daytime highs generally in the mid-60s to lower 70s across much of Los Angeles County.

Orange County is also expected to experience cooler temperatures and periods of rain, with thunderstorms possible as the storm moves through Southern California.

Forecasters said snow is unlikely below 8,000 feet.

Forecasters also warned of deteriorating marine conditions, with thunderstorms and isolated waterspouts possible in coastal waters. The NWS warned that thunderstorms over the ocean could produce lightning, gusty and erratic winds, small hail and choppy seas.

A beach hazards statement remains in effect through late Thursday night for portions of the Los Angeles County coastline. Elevated surf and dangerous rip currents are expected, with minor beach erosion and tidal
overflow possible in low-lying areas.

As is typical with rain events, Los Angeles County health officials advised residents to avoid contact with ocean water due to bacteria and debris that can be carried to the coast by precipitation. An ocean water quality rain
advisory will be in place until at least 3 p.m. Saturday, urging people to avoid entering the ocean, especially near discharging storm drains, creeks and rivers.

Dry weather is expected to return Friday, followed by another round of offshore Santa Ana winds over the weekend. Forecasters said the upcoming Santa Ana event would be weaker than last week’s, with wind gusts of 30 to 50 mph possible, strongest in the mountains.

In advance of the storm Wednesday, city of Los Angeles crews worked to install reinforced barriers while shoring up hillsides and clearing debris from neighborhoods and burn areas. Officials encouraged residents to sign up for emergency alerts through NotifyLA, make emergency plans with their family and prepare essential supplies. Residents can check if their home is in a flood zone at the LA County’s website.

Free sand and sand bags were made available at fire stations.

Under a mayoral emergency executive order issued after the January 2025 wildfires, Public Works crews were continuing mitigation efforts throughout Pacific Palisades by providing sandbags and installing more than
13,000 feet of K-rail.

The Los Angeles Fire Department has specialized resources available that can assist with swift water rescues and other rain-related issues, and the police department is prepared to assist with any evacuation orders or other emergencies as needed, according to city officials.

Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority teams have been conducting outreach to inform unhoused Angelenos of the weather and to provide them with safety information and supplies.

Street services crews were also on standby and are prepared to respond to impacts on roadways. The Department of Transportation and Bureau of Engineering will continue to monitor known landslide-risk areas that could impact roadway access as well.

Lastly, the Bureau of Sanitation was monitoring the city’s wastewater conveyance system to manage incoming water flow. Crews regularly clean and monitor 18 debris basins in the Palisades area.

“While we don’t know how much wet weather Los Angeles will get this winter, we know what heavy rain and strong winds can do here: streets can flood quickly, trees and power lines can come down, and in the Palisades and other recent burn areas, dangerous mud and debris flows could impact homes. That’s why we are taking action now to keep Angelenos safe,” Mayor Karen Bass said in a statement Wednesday.

Rain swept across most of Southern California Wednesday as a strong autumn storm moved over the area, promising…

[27
48,52,51,47,50,49,19
post-503625","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-los-angeles","tag-la","tag-la-headlines","tag-la-news","tag-los-angeles","tag-los-angeles-headlines","tag-los-angeles-news","tag-weather
["GET
