Berkeley police, dispatchers and other emergency workers were forced to evacuate their downtown headquarters after a \u201csmall fire\u201d broke out there Wednesday afternoon, according to police.<\/p>\n

In an electronic alert shortly before 5:30 p.m. police said that all 911 calls are being temporarily rerouted to an Alameda County dispatch center.<\/p>\n

The alert did not provide any details as to how, when or where in the building the fire started, or how much damage it may have caused. Police and fire officials did not immediately respond to follow-up inquiries.<\/p>\n

The fire comes just six days after city and state officials announced<\/a> the dispatch center would get $1 million in state funds to upgrade its hardware, outfit a new classroom and make other improvements.<\/p>\n
