It could save lives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>  Oct. 22, 2026 5 AM PT  <\/p>\n<p>To the editor: I\u2019m perplexed by the description of Jonathan Hale as a \u201crebel\u201d (<a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-10-16\/risking-arrest-he-paints-illicit-crosswalks-in-la-we-cant-wait\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cRisking arrest, he paints illicit crosswalks across L.A. \u2018We can\u2019t wait any longer,\u2019\u201d<\/a> Oct. 16). To me, a rebel would be someone who resorts to violence or destruction because they disagree politically with Mayor Karen Bass.<\/p>\n<p>Hale and his supporters, by contrast, voluntarily paint crosswalks for the benefit of all Angelenos. While the city may have legitimate concerns about unauthorized street markings, Hale\u2019s intentions are to improve public safety, and his actions may have even saved lives. So instead of portraying him as a vigilante straight out of a Charles Bronson movie, why not praise him?
