(FOX26) \u2014 Fresno residents facing federal immigration enforcement will again have access to city-backed legal help after the Fresno City Council voted 5-1 to <a href=\"https:\/\/kmph.com\/news\/local\/fresno-councilmember-to-seek-revival-of-immigration-legal-defense-fund-with-1m-proposal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reestablish the city\u2019s Immigration Legal Defense Fund<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution restores resources intended to help City of Fresno residents obtain legal representation in immigration-related matters, particularly in cases involving federal enforcement efforts.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution directs the city manager to prioritize identifying available funds to allocate $1 million to the program.<\/p>\n<p>Fresno City Councilman Miguel Arias released the following statement:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, the City Council approved my proposal to reestablish the Immigrant Legal Defense Fund, an important step toward protecting our residents, defending due process, and standing up against the Trump administration\u2019s abusive immigration enforcement practices.<\/p>\n<p>The City of Fresno has successfully challenged the Trump administration in federal court when it attempted to withhold critical federal funding from our city. We stood up to protect our city\u2019s resources then, and we have a responsibility to stand up for our residents now.<\/p>\n<p>If we can take the federal government to court to protect our city\u2019s funding, we can and must provide our residents with the resources to defend themselves in court when their fundamental constitutional rights are at stake.<\/p>\n<p>Our immigrant communities are an integral part of Fresno. They are our neighbors, coworkers, business owners, and taxpayers who contribute to our local economy, strengthen our neighborhoods, and play an essential role in our city\u2019s continued growth and prosperity. They deserve dignity, fairness, and full Constitutional protection.<\/p>\n<p>No president, federal agency, or immigration enforcement officer is above the law. Due process is not a privilege reserved for a select few; it is a fundamental constitutional protection afforded to every person in this country, regardless of immigration status.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s action sends a clear message: Fresno will not turn its back on immigrant families facing fear, intimidation, or potential violations of their constitutional rights. We have fought to protect our city\u2019s resources. Now, we are committing resources to protect our residents.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"FRESNO, Calif.
