He had been released from prison in April, authorities said. He is being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail.

According to court records, a 23-year-old man was sitting in his parked Tesla outside his East Oakland home about 5:40 p.m. Sunday when a man later identified as Jones approached the vehicle holding a pistol. The man opened a car door and told the victim to get in the passenger seat.

The suspect demanded to know where the man’s valuables were; when the man told him they were inside his home, the robber forced him to go into the residence, where he filled a pillow case with a Playstation 5, $1,000 in designer shoes and other items, the records say.

The suspect then ordered the man back into the Tesla and drove him to his bank near Lake Merritt where he made him withdraw money from an ATM, the records say. The suspect also threatened that he would shoot the man if he tried to run away.

The suspect then drove the man back to his home and left him there, but not before telling him if he called 911 he would return and shoot up his house and kill him, the records say.

But police were called; police used tracking devices to find the Tesla, with Jones driving. He was arrested near the intersection of Chase and Willow streets in West Oakland. Some of the loss from the victim was recovered, as was the gun believed used in the crimes, authorities said. He declined to talk to investigators.

Jones’ arrest marks another twist in a yearslong legal saga, which began with the December 2012 killing of a 15-year-old girl during an East Oakland gang war.

Jones was 17 when prosecutors say he opened fire on rival gang members and killed Jubrille Jordan, 15. The girl was on her way to shop for New Year’s Eve outfits with her sister and best friends when she was caught in the crossfire. A 14-year-old boy who was the intended target was wounded in the foot.

Jones was arrested in November 2014, and a jury in July 2015 convicted him, along with two others, of first-degree murder and attempted murder in the killing. He was sentenced to 114 years in prison. The other two defendants, Vijay Bhushan and Marquise Thompson, were sentenced to 34 years to life and 32 years to life, respectively.

Jones’ case took a turn with the 2016 passage of Proposition 57, which changed the process under which juveniles could be charged as adults. As a result, an appellate court later ordered Jones’ case back to juvenile court for the purposes of conducting a transfer hearing – a special court proceeding to determine whether defendants are tried as adults or kept in juvenile court.

The case garnered outsized attention in 2023, when newly-elected District Attorney Pamela Price maneuvered to keep his case in juvenile court as a means to potentially lop off about 100 years from Jones’ sentence.

The move drew pushback at the time from Jubrille Jordan’s brother, Justin Young, who said he felt “pushed into a corner” by Price when the two initially met on the case. He said Jones was “either going to end up hurting some other people or get some other people hurt.”

A judge later sent his case back to adult court in 2024, and he was resentenced to 16 years in prison on newly-imposed convictions of manslaughter, attempted second-degree murder and unlawful firearm activity.

The resentencing request was made by both Price’s office and Jones’ attorney, court records show. At his resentencing hearing, Alameda County Judge Thomas Stevens called the move “the best option among many bad options,” given that the resulting litigation “would have no end in sight.”

Jones had a “disastrous” childhood, the judge said; Jones was shot by his brother at the age of 5 and watched his mother get sent to prison when he was 14, court records show. At the time of his resentencing, Jones’ rehabilitation appeared to be “average, maybe a B or a B-plus,” the judge opined, and his disciplinary record had “not been impressive.”

Still, the judge added, Jones had expressed remorse and took responsibility for the 2012 killing.

“I would say he is a very different person,” Stevens said from the bench.

OAKLAND — A man recently paroled after spending less than 11 years in prison for fatally shooting a…

[34
389,184,861,7,8,392,138,332,1529,393,9858,134,181,100,143,145,144,7912,385,2480,94685
post-505205","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-oakland","tag-alameda-county","tag-bay-area","tag-bay-area-crime","tag-california","tag-california-news","tag-contra-costa-county","tag-crime-and-public-safety","tag-east-bay","tag-east-bay-crime","tag-east-contra-costa","tag-east-oakland","tag-homicide","tag-latest-headlines","tag-news","tag-oakland","tag-oakland-headlines","tag-oakland-news","tag-pittsburg","tag-regional","tag-robbery","tag-social-alert
["GET
