SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — San Francisco voters will soon decide the future of the Great Highway once again as supporters and opponents of Proposition G make their case ahead of the election.<\/p>\n

The ballot measure would reopen the roadway to vehicle traffic on weekdays while closing it on weekends.<\/p>\n

Albert Chow, a supporter of Proposition G, said the closure of the roadway has contributed to traffic problems in surrounding neighborhoods.<\/p>\n

“This is directly because of someone taking the whole pie and not sharing it,” Chow said.<\/p>\n

“Traffic on certain exits near our neighborhood that take people to the Sunset are being avoided or are jammed up really bad because this road has been taken away,” he said.<\/p>\n

Opponents argue the measure would undo changes that transformed the area into Sunset Dunes park.<\/p>\n

“Our city is trying to avoid layoffs of city staff and at the same time we’re voting for the third time in four years on something voters have already settled,” said Lucas Lux, president of the group Friends of Sunset Dunes.<\/p>\n

Lux said Proposition G would dismantle the park, which was built on top of the Great Highway.<\/p>\n

“This park is already one of the city’s most popular parks. It is an incredible future for our coast,” Lux said.<\/p>\n

Despite the disagreement over Proposition G, supporters and opponents alike said the debate has divided the community.<\/p>\n

“I personally would not fight it again. I wouldn’t re-litigate this again because I think at that point people have spoken. But then I’ll see where things go,” Chow said.<\/p>\n

Voters will decide the measure in less than two weeks, determining the future of the two-mile stretch of roadway and parkland along San Francisco’s western shoreline.<\/p>\n
