Highway patrol officers responded to the scene around 2:30 a.m. local time and determined upon arrival that the pedestrian \u2014 a 71-year-old man from Vallejo, Calif. \u2014 had died of his injuries, the CHP said. He has since been identified by the Solano County Coroner’s Office as Domingo Gonzales, according to the San Francisco Chronicle<\/a>.<\/p>\n The vehicle-versus-pedestrian crash at the I-780 interchange was captured in full on the dash camera of the Tesla, the CHP said. The Tesla driver, identified by the CHP as a 26-year-old San Francisco man, cooperated with highway patrol, providing the footage to officers on the scene.\u00a0<\/p>\n California Highway Patrol vehicle The Tesla was traveling at approximately 70 mph when Gonzales entered the freeway from the right shoulder and “began crossing toward the center divide, stepping directly” into the vehicle’s path, according to highway patrol’s preliminary review of the dashcam footage.<\/p>\n “The video showed the Tesla’s brakes being applied as the vehicle steered to the left in an effort to avoid the pedestrian,” the CHP said. “Despite these evasive actions, the right front portion of the Tesla struck the individual.”<\/p>\n At least one other vehicle hit Gonzales as he lay in Interstate 80’s traffic lanes after this initial collision, according to the CHP. No other drivers stopped, and “the identity of any subsequent involved vehicle or driver is currently unknown,” the agency said.<\/p>\n The driver said the Tesla was being operated in full self-driving (FSD) autonomous mode at the time of the crash, according to the CHP.<\/p>\n The Tesla website<\/a> states that “full self-driving (supervised)” mode “intelligently and accurately completes driving maneuvers for you, including route navigation, steering, lane changes, parking and more under your active supervision.”<\/p>\n “Use it for quick errands, daily commutes and road trips,” the website further states, and cautions that “currently enabled features require active driver supervision and do not make the vehicle autonomous.”<\/p>\n Tesla’s website additionally states that the vehicle’s 360-degree exterior cameras and other safety features can “help reduce the severity of accidents or prevent them altogether.”<\/p>\n The Solano County Coroner’s Office and a Tesla spokesperson did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Saturday, Oct. 24.<\/p>\n The CHP’s Solano office is investigating the crash and is urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident “or who has information regarding the other vehicles involved” to reach out.<\/p>\n![\"California](\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/https:\/\/media.zenfs.com\/en\/people_218\/5e0fdf1989b9316f73636c56ac31c336.jpg\"\/)
