After the kill, the Bruins grabbed the momentum, with Pastrnak and James Hagens scoring 40 seconds apart before Fraser Minten gave Boston a 5-3 lead at the 12:00 mark.

Will Smith scored 27 seconds later, but the Sharks couldn’t find the equalizer despite some quality chances, and they finished the six-game road trip with a 3-2-1 record.

The Sharks’ net front issues were the main culprit Saturday, as four of the Bruins’ first five goals came around the blue paint.

“It’s a good hockey game between two good teams,” Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky said. “I thought we did some really good things. I liked our first and second (periods), but around our net, we’re not good enough.”

The Sharks, outscored 4-2 in the third period by the Bruins, have been one of the NHL’s worst third-period teams, allowing 17 goals and scoring just 10 in the final 20 minutes of regulation before Saturday. That included blowing four leads of at least two goals.

“We’ve just got to be better in the third,” Smith said. “When we get a lead, we’ve got to defend it, and when we do have a lead, we’ve got to stay on the gas, and not sit back.”

Michael Misa scored on the power play, and Kiefer Sherwood added a shorthanded goal in the Sharks’ loss. Nedeljkovic finished with 29 saves.

Just over two minutes after Sherwood’s goal, at 13:34 in the third period, Bruins forward Mark Kastelic hit Michael Kesselring from behind into the boards to the right of the Sharks’ net. Kesselring didn’t waste any time going at Kastelic, with the two dropping the gloves with 4:23 left in the second period.

The Sharks allowed even-strength goals to Casey Mittelstadt and Marat Khusnutdinov in the first two periods as Nedeljkovic stopped 21 of 23 shots.

The Sharks were outshot 12-11 in the first period and were hemmed in their own zone a couple of times, but they tied it 1-1 with the Bruins after 20 minutes.

The Sharks got a power-play goal just 1:16 after Mittelstadt gave the Bruins a 1-0 lead at the 3:08 mark of the first. After Misa got the puck back to Jacob Trouba at the point, he headed toward the net, collected a shot from Tyler Toffoli, and tucked it in for his second goal of the season.

Nedeljkovic, in his fourth start of the six-game road trip, made 11 saves in the first period. Nedeljkovic has had an excellent start to the season, coming into Saturday with a 3-0-1 record and a .917 save percentage.

CHERNYSHOV UPDATE

Winger Igor Chernyshov is now week-to-week with an upper-body injury and returned to San Jose for further evaluation, Warsofsky said Saturday.

Chernyshov was injured in the first period of the Sharks’ game against the Ottawa Senators on Thursday when he blocked a slap shot from Senators defenseman Nikolas Matinpalo. Chernyshov, who was tied for eighth on the Sharks with four points in 11 games before Saturday, left the ice and did not return as the Sharks went on to a 6-2 win at Canadian Tire Centre.

Sharks center Alexander Wennberg is also injured, leaving last Monday’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs with an upper-body ailment. Unlike Chernyshov, Wennberg is still on the trip.

“It’s a big loss,” Warsofsky said of Chernyshov’s injury. “Obviously, getting hit with him and (Wennberg) is tough. But again, (it’s an) opportunity for some guys to get in there and play some good minutes and fill some holes.”

With Chernyshov out, Adam Gaudette made his season debut and started on the fourth line with center Zack Ostapchuk and Barclay Goodrow. Gaudette, born in nearby Braintree, Mass., spent the first four games of the season on injured reserve and has been scratched for the last seven.

“I think problems happen when you’re overthinking things, trying to do too much,” Gaudette said. “So, I’m just going to keep it simple, trust the systems, trust my linemates, and go out there and have fun. That’s why I play this game. It’s fun.”

[29
404,88,90,89,98,127
post-507432","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-san-jose","tag-nhl","tag-san-jose","tag-san-jose-headlines","tag-san-jose-news","tag-san-jose-sharks","tag-sports
["GET
