The Del Mar City Council voted Oct. 20 to approve a second reading of new speed limits at eight points, which officially go into effect in 30 days.<\/p>\n
Four of the segments are on Camino Del Mar: from Via de la Valle to the Dog Beach crosswalk and from the Dog Beach crosswalk to the San Dieguito Bridge, which are being lowered from 40 mph to 30 mph; and from Coast Boulevard to Jimmy Durante Boulevard and from Jimmy Durante Boulevard to Del Mar Plaza, which are being reduced from 35 mph to 30 mph.<\/p>\n
Three of the segments are along Jimmy Durante Boulevard: from Via de la Valle to the rideshare gate at the fairgrounds, which is being reduced from 45 mph to 40 mph; from the rideshare gate to San Dieguito Drive, which is going from 45 mph to 30 mph; and San Dieguito Drive to Camino Del Mar, which is going from 35 mph to 30 mph, and on Via de la Valle, from Camino Del Mar to Jimmy Durante Boulevard, which will be reduced from 40 mph to 35 mph.<\/p>\n
The reductions stem from a Traffic and Parking Advisory Committee recommendation to look into possible speed limit reductions at certain points throughout the city, according to a council agenda report. Speed surveys, which are regularly conducted to determine the 85th percentile speed, are used as the basis.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe survey establishes the speed that the majority of safe and reasonable drivers are traveling and is the basis for the established speed limit,\u201d according to a council agenda report. \u201cThe California Vehicle Code and the California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices state that posted speed limits shall be set at the nearest 5 mph increment of the 85th percentile speed. The City may choose to lower the rounded amount by 5 mph through engineering judgment.
