That was Chappell Roan<\/a> on Wednesday at the Shrine Auditorium, where somebody in the audience did indeed light up moments after the pop singer emerged onstage to headline Night 1 of her Super Graphic Spectacular.<\/p>\n

Timed to mark the first birthday of Roan\u2019s Midwest Princess Project \u2014 a charitable effort meant to \u201cuplift trans youth and LGBTQ+ communities through action, care and connection\u201d \u2014 the two-day event features Roan atop a bill that also includes Lola Young<\/a> and Tinashe (both of whom performed brief sets Wednesday) and Muna and Caroline Polachek (both of whom are set to play Thursday).<\/p>\n

Night 1 also had the drag performer Kyra Jet\u00e9 and the veteran performance artist Amanda Lepore; as the evening\u2019s host, the comedian Caleb Hearon wondered, \u201cWhy is there a man here?\u201d then got the crowd cheering with a mention of Nithya Raman\u2019s mayoral campaign. Proceeds for the show will go to the Midwest Princess Project, which Roan says has already raised more than $800,000.<\/p>\n

Do Roan\u2019s fans care that she has yet to drop a follow-up to her instant-classic 2023 debut, \u201cThe Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess<\/a>\u201d? No doubt they do; Roan herself sheepishly admitted Wednesday, \u201cI haven\u2019t released a song in a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n

But because she\u2019s such a skilled live performer \u2014 vocally precise, physically committed, emotionally generous \u2014 nobody here seemed to mind that she played basically the same set she\u2019s been doing for a few years now. I can tell you the weed smoker was far from the only one having a good time for a good cause.<\/p>\n

In a sense, Roan\u2019s show is a thrill because its beats are so familiar: Given how many times she\u2019s sung the likes of \u201cCasual\u201d and \u201cThe Subway,\u201d to name two of her most grandly dramatic ballads, you\u2019d expect her to have dialed in every musical detail as tightly as she has. (As she blasted off at the climax of \u201cThe Subway,\u201d she absent-mindedly twisted a braid of her hair in her fingers.) At the Shrine, though, each song was still a startling feat of storytelling \u2014 a raw wound that somehow hadn\u2019t healed at all.<\/p>\n

Conversely, uptempo jams like \u201cFemininomenon\u201d and \u201cRed Wine Supernova\u201d retained every bit of their horny exuberance, even in a lyric about getting it \u201chot like Papa John\u201d that a lesser singer might have come to regret. (Never change, Chappell.)<\/p>\n

Wednesday\u2019s performance did offer two novel moments. Describing her guest as a \u201cf\u2014 legend\u201d who \u201chonestly paved the way for me and all women in pop to do whatever the f\u2014 they want,\u201d Roan welcomed Christina Aguilera<\/a> to the stage for a characteristically acrobatic take on her early-2000s hit \u201cBeautiful\u201d; Aguilera stuck around to duet sweetly with Roan on \u201cCoffee,\u201d which she called her favorite of Roan\u2019s songs.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the moment I heard Chappell\u2019s voice, I knew she was a force to be reckoned with,\u201d Aguilera said.<\/p>\n

Roan also performed her pal Olivia Rodrigo\u2019s song \u201cExpectations,\u201d a remix of which came out last week with a new verse in which Roan laments the \u201cclassic L.A. behavior\u201d of girls who ghost after a great first date. And she closed, as she always does, with \u201cPink Pony Club,\u201d her all-timer of a disco-glam anthem about finding her true self in a West Hollywood gay club \u201cwhere boys and girls can all be queens every single day.\u201d But before that she thanked her fans for their energy and offered a small benediction in return.<\/p>\n
