It isn’t hard to explain why the 49ers lost their first game of the season Sunday.

A 10 a.m. Pacific Time kickoff on a short week after a cross-country flight with no reliable wideouts is a good place to start. Add in a half-game from Christian McCaffrey, four turnovers, zero takeaways, seven brutal penalties and not a single sack against the most sackable quarterback in football, and it’s pretty easy to see how things went south in Atlanta as the 49ers fell 29-20 to the Falcons.

This game looked like a loss the second the NFL released the 49ers’ schedule in the spring. In December, we’ll all probably look back on this game and blame it on the schedule, too.

Keep it in the short term, though, and Sunday exposed nasty cracks in San Francisco’s foundation.

Brock Purdy had a clear mandate to play like a Most Valuable Player award candidate. Instead, he played like a different MVP: Most Variable Passer.

The Niners needed their defensive front to bully people. Instead, they were pushed around.

Defensive coordinator Raheem Morris had to dial up cool plays, again and again. Instead, he parked in deep zone coverage, gave Atlanta free cushions and let Atlanta quarterback Michael Penix pepper the flats in an homage to Atlanta’s most famous culinary creation.

Everything tilted against the Niners, yet the end result still makes it feel like they gave this game away.

Because, well, they did.

Their first two giveaways — a Kaelon Black fumble and Purdy’s first interception — came well inside Atlanta territory. Even if kicker Eddy Piñeiro can’t be trusted to hit water from a boat right now (he missed his fourth extra-point attempt of the season Sunday), they were theoretically in scoring position.

Atlanta flipped those gifts into 10 points, then used the first possession of the second half as a jumpstart for a 23-0 blitz that erased San Francisco’s early 14-3 edge.

“That was a huge turning point with possession,” Purdy said of the first interception. “Gotta learn from that the tough way.”

Yes, we’re always growing and learning as people, but that’s not something you want to hear from your franchise quarterback, now, is it?

Yes, those turnovers flipped the game, and upon the Niners falling behind, an alarming subplot bubbled to the surface: They didn’t appear to have an earthly clue about what to do on offense when they’re trailing.

To be fair, they haven’t had to practice it much this year, and there was still a flash here and there to receiver Jordan Watkins.

But without McCaffrey — who vanished into the medical tent with a thigh issue in the second quarter — Kyle Shanahan’s offense looked lost. When McCaffrey limped back out for the fourth quarter, wouldn’t you know it, San Francisco found the end zone. It was as if they entered the game with one plan to score, and it was to ride the injury-prone star back. How on earth did that go wrong?

Missing Mike Evans downfield, losing McCaffrey for huge stretches and generating zero pressure on a statue like Penix proved fatal. And that’s not even mentioning the Niners playing Jack Jones at cornerback. He was rightly benched before the end of the game.

Maybe it’s just a one-week blip. The circumstances were less than ideal, after all, and they should change moving forward.

Deebo Samuel, Nick Bosa, DeMarcus Robinson, Marques Sigle, Upton Stout and maybe even Evans should be back after the bye.

Getting your top three wideouts, your premier edge rusher, your starting free safety and your nickel corner back on the field changes the math. It turns this clunker into a trivia question — a weird bump in the road that landed the 49ers their first defeat.

But until proven as such, keep a pin in this for a bit. The Niners led by two at halftime Sunday, yes, but there’s an ugly trend line to note: They’re 2-14 when trailing at the break since the start of 2023.

Trailing after three quarters? They’re 2-18. (Both comebacks came against Seattle — the season opener in 2025 and Evans’ big game two weeks ago.)

Shanahan scripts opening drives better than anyone in the sport. You can see that with the Niners’ incredible offensive starts this season.

But his ability to counter-punch once a defense punches back remains an open question.

Purdy can usually paper over those cracks with some creative magic. But when he’s stripped of his blue-chip weapons, as he was in Atlanta, his freelancing doesn’t fix the problem — it compounds it.

When fully loaded, the 49ers are fantastic. A juggernaut? Absolutely not. Sunday wasn’t a secret reveal; it was a reminder of that truth.

But the schedule only gets nastier from here: the Vikings in Mexico City, another bout with Seattle, Kansas City at Arrowhead after Christmas, plus the Rams and Cowboys might have their acts together by the time the Niners play them.

With that in mind, maybe getting smacked around was the best thing for them — a splash of cold water before a reset week. Nobody actually thought they were chasing the 1972 Dolphins anyway.

Then again, perhaps Sunday was an ominous prologue.

The Niners still control their season. They’ve earned that cushion.

But they controlled that game Sunday until they let go of the rope in spectacular fashion. What’s to say that can’t happen in a more macro sense?

So what will the Niners’ second half of the season look like?

I’d say follow the Niners’ lead and catch your breath during the bye week, folks.

Because if the opening act is any guide, it’s going to be pure, unadulterated chaos.
