<\/a>SACRAMENTO, Calif. \u2014<\/p>\nThere’s now a safer way for bikers and walkers in Sacramento’s North Natomas community to use part of Jackrabbit Trail.<\/p>\n
The city recently completed work on an enhanced crossing section that connects the trail as it passes over Arena Boulevard near Truxel Road.<\/p>\n
City leaders and community groups came together Monday to celebrate the project’s completion with a ribbon cutting ceremony and community bike ride.<\/p>\n
The new, well-defined crosswalk features overhead and traffic light features, designed to enhance safe crossing at all times of day.<\/p>\n
Project proponents say the crossing makes things safer for people walking and biking on the eight-mile trail running between Elkhorn Boulevard and Garden Highway alongside the Natomas East Drainage Canal and it connects North Natomas to the American River Parkway and beyond.<\/p>\n
Years in the making, the project was supported by North Natomas Jibe \u2013 a nonprofit group that promotes sustainable, active transportation like walking, biking, and public transit \u2013 and funding secured by Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty while he served in the State Assembly. <\/p>\n
The city says the project’s price tag was $1.5 million.<\/p>\n
“This is a vital section and a way for people to walk, bike, and roll all the way to downtown and beyond,” said Mellissa Meng, executive director of North Natomas Jibe. “Having a safe crossing is essential.”<\/p>\n
