So many people have taken the time to introduce themselves, share their experiences and help me feel like part of the OU community. I want to thank everyone who has made my transition to Oakland such a positive experience.

As I reflect on my first few months at OU, I have come to appreciate what makes this university special: the people who are part of it. I especially want to thank the students involved in the Center for Multicultural Initiatives (CMI), Housing and Residential Life, club sports, the Student Activity Fund Assessment Committee (SAFAC) and our fraternities and sororities, along with the many other students who have stopped me on campus to introduce themselves. Those conversations have helped me feel welcomed and learn more about what makes OU special.

Whether you are in your first semester or preparing to graduate, I want you to know that you belong at Oakland University. Each of you brings different experiences, perspectives and interests to our campus. You are an important part of what makes OU special.

I also recognize that finding your place in college is not always easy. Some of you are adjusting to a new environment, making friends, balancing work and family responsibilities or questioning whether you have what it takes to be successful. At times, it may seem like everyone around you has already figured things out.

I can assure you that many of your peers have experienced those same feelings. It takes time to find your place, and that is okay.

With that in mind, I want to share three pieces of advice with you.

Ask Questions

Be curious about the people around you. Introduce yourself to someone in class. Ask what brought them to Oakland, what they enjoy studying or what they hope to do after graduation. You might discover something in common or learn from a different experience.

Ask to understand, not to debate or prove a point. We will not always agree, and that is okay. Listening to different perspectives helps us grow. Bring that curiosity into the classroom, too. Raise your hand when you have a question; chances are someone else is wondering the same thing.

A simple conversation can lead to a friendship, an opportunity or a new way of seeing the world.

Ask for Help

I have always believed that successful people are willing to ask for help. They recognize that they do not have all the answers and understand the importance of seeking advice and learning from others.

Even at this stage of my life and career, I continue to seek guidance from mentors in different areas of my life, including my career, finances, family and personal development. I value their experiences and perspectives because they help me think through challenges and make better decisions.

There will be times during your college experience when you struggle with a class, experience personal challenges or feel overwhelmed by everything you are trying to balance. When that happens, I encourage you to reach out to someone.

Visit your professors during office hours, even if it is just to introduce yourself or learn more about a subject that interests you. Connect with the Counseling Center if you need someone to talk to. If you live on campus, get to know your resident assistant and the staff in Housing and Residential Life.

I also want you to know that you do not need to wait until something becomes a serious problem before asking for help. Whether you are struggling in a class or dealing with something in your personal life, reaching out early can help you address a concern before it becomes more difficult.

As a university, we have a responsibility to make sure students know what resources are available and feel comfortable using them. We want you to take advantage of the people and services here to support your success.

The Dean of Students (DOS) is a great place to start if you do not know exactly which office you should visit. Although some students associate the DOS with conduct matters, the office does much more. Its staff can help you navigate a difficult situation, understand your options and connect with the right campus resources. If you are unsure where to turn for guidance, the team is in the Oakland Center Room 150 and is ready to help.

Say Yes

One of the things I enjoy most about working at a university is seeing students discover interests and opportunities they may not have considered before coming to college.

I encourage you to take some calculated risks and explore what Oakland has to offer.

Consider studying abroad and experiencing another culture. Apply for an internship, even if you are not sure you have all the qualifications. Ask a faculty member about getting involved in research. Attend a student organization meeting, participate in a community service project or consider taking on a leadership role.

You may discover an interest you never knew you had or realize that something you thought you wanted to pursue is not for you. Both experiences are valuable.

I also recognize that many of our students have responsibilities outside of the classroom. Some of you work significant hours, commute to campus or help care for family members. Not everyone has the same time or financial resources to participate in every opportunity.

My advice is to find something that interests you and give it a try. You do not have to participate in everything to have a meaningful college experience.

And when you find something you enjoy, consider inviting someone else to join you. Think about how much it means when someone takes the time to include you in a conversation, invites you to an event or introduces you to a new group of friends. You can do that for someone else.

You Belong Here

My hope is that every student at Oakland University feels as welcomed, valued and supported as I have felt during my first three months here. As faculty, staff and students, we all have a responsibility to create that same sense of belonging for one another.

Remember to ask questions, ask for help and say yes to opportunities that interest you. You belong at Oakland University, and I look forward to seeing what you accomplish.

Go Golden Grizzlies!

Trung Nguyen is the vice president for student affairs and engagement at Oakland University.

Since joining Oakland University this summer, I have been grateful for the warm welcome from students, faculty and…

[34
143,145,144
post-508852","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-oakland","tag-oakland","tag-oakland-headlines","tag-oakland-news
["GET
