Seawater flooded a portion of San Francisco’s Embarcadero on Monday amid the city’s highest October tide on record<\/a> – and the waterline will probably go even higher in the next few days.<\/p>\n

Flooding was most apparent south of the Ferry Building and cut off access to Pier 14. Seawater also rose through a storm drain along the Embarcadero roadway, where Port of San Francisco employees coned off the area.<\/p>\n

Tides are expected to be even higher Tuesday and Wednesday. In San Francisco, Wednesday’s high tide may be 2.1 feet above normal. King tides the weeks of Thanksgiving and Christmas will be higher and potentially a major disruption if a storm coincides.<\/p>\n

In Mill Valley on Monday, Caltrans closed an onramp to Highway 101, and KTVU reported<\/a> closed roads in other parts of the city – including Miller Avenue, where a vehicle appeared to stall in floodwater.<\/p>\n

These scenes aren’t atypical of the area when a king tide coincides with a midwinter storm, but coastal flooding like Monday is a rare sight on a sunny day. There were no major waves or wind to push the water from shoreline sidewalks into the adjacent roadway. If that were to happen later this winter, the disruption would be much worse.<\/a><\/p>\n

El Ni\u00f1o is warming California’s coastal waters<\/a> and pushing sea levels more than a foot higher than predicted in annual tide charts. Monday’s high tide in San Francisco was 1.87 feet above a typical high tide, breaking an October record set just two weeks ago.<\/p>\n

San Diego and Los Angeles set new high tide records Monday for any month. The Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1) closed in Huntington Beach (Orange County) due to flooding. Videos on social media showed flooding in low-lying coastal communities in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties.<\/p>\n

The melting of ice sheets and glaciers, and expansion of warming ocean water, has already added 8 inches to sea levels along the California coast in the past century. Sea levels will rise even higher by the end of the century – by many feet – but exact projections hinge on whether humans slow down or stop burning planet-warming fossil fuels.<\/p>\n
