The 49ers dropped their first game<\/a> of the 2026 NFL season after losing 29-20 to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, falling to 6-1. A lot went wrong for them in the game, but one area in particular gave San Francisco trouble. Kicker Eddy Pi\u00f1eiro missed his seventh kick of the season in the loss, failing to convert on an extra point in the fourth quarter.<\/p>\n

Pi\u00f1eiro has struggled most of this season<\/a> after a strong 2025 campaign, bringing up questions about his future. But after coach Kyle Shanahan was asked about a potential change, he shut down any speculation during a conference call on Monday, saying that the team is not trying out any kickers. <\/p>\n

“I haven’t discussed it with guys. I haven’t been told that we are,” Shanahan told reporters. “I actually just finished with the team and just finished with the quarterbacks and came in here. As far as I’ve heard we don’t have any plans on that right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pi\u00f1eiro, who signed a four-year contract extension<\/a> this offseason, still has the coaching staff’s vote of confidence. Coming in last season after Jake Moody struggled, he proved early on how well he can perform in the clutch. Pi\u00f1eiro played 14 games for San Francisco last season, converting on 28 of his 29 field-goal attempts and 34 of his 38 extra points.<\/p>\n

But the 49ers’ hot start has put them firmly in the Super Bowl contender conversation, and in order to see that goal come to fruition, each win is more magnified. Pi\u00f1eiro can’t keep leaving points on the board with missed kicks if he wants to stick around as San Francisco’s long-term kicker.<\/p>\n

The 49ers are on a bye week following their loss to the Falcons and are using the week off to rest, recover and bounce back ahead of a pivotal Week 9 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders at home. <\/p>\n

That game will be a major tone setter as they approach a tough stretch that includes games against the Dallas Cowboys on the road, the undefeated Minnesota Vikings in Mexico City on “Sunday Night Football” followed by a rematch against the Seattle Seahawks at home.<\/p>\n
