Audits of lists in letters sent to counties found discrepancies, according to election and state officials.

In Solano County, interim Registrar of Voters John Gardner said his office received about 170 names. A preliminary review of a random sample found that about 55% had canceled voter registrations.

“The timing was absolutely terrible,” Gardner said. “This should have been months ago, well before sending ballots out to voters.”

One person in the sample was listed as deceased in county records, Gardner said. Others had registrations canceled years ago.

“The oldest one in the sample was from 2006, so the person had not been receiving ballots for a long time,” he said.

Gardner emphasized that his office’s review was limited to checking whether the names matched county voter records. It did not verify citizenship.

“It’s a very cursory look, just seeing if they’re in our list, if we could match it to a real voter,” he said.

Gardner said his office is not setting aside ballots and is awaiting further direction from the California secretary of state or the courts.

Sacramento County also received a list of 602 names, according to a county spokesperson Monday, who said officials are reviewing the Justice Department’s request.

“In the meantime, the County will continue to carry out its election responsibilities in accordance with state and federal law,” the county spokesperson said. “Our priority remains conducting a fair, accurate, secure and transparent election while protecting the rights and privacy of voters.”

California Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office also reported discrepancies in other counties’ lists. According to a news release from Bonta’s office, a preliminary review of 200 names provided to Los Angeles County found more than half had canceled or inactive registrations, 38.9% listed a U.S. birthplace and 71.2% had no voting history.

In Mendocino County, the clerk-recorder found that every person on the federal government’s list lived outside the county, according to the release.

Other counties continue to look into the letters sent to them.

The Justice Department’s letters to counties follow an Oct. 13 request to the California secretary of state involving more than 20,000 people the Justice Department believes are noncitizens registered to vote. The department wants election officials to set aside mail ballots from people on the list and verify their citizenship before counting them.

The Trump administration sued California to compel the state to comply with the citizenship verification request.

The effort faced a procedural setback Monday when a three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals dismissed the administration’s appeal. The panel said intervention was premature because a lower court had not yet ruled on the state’s request to dismiss the lawsuit. A hearing in that case is scheduled for Tuesday.

ABC10 asked the Justice Department how it obtained the names, what evidence it has that the people identified are not U.S. citizens and what could happen if counties refuse to comply.

A spokesperson responded but did not answer those questions.

“We are asking each county election official to commit to working with us by providing the necessary information for DHS to quickly verify citizenship status,” the spokesperson said, referring to the Department of Homeland Security. “With their help, we can ensure the most secure election in California history.”

Meanwhile, Gardner said election work in Solano County is continuing as usual.

“We received about 5,000 ballots from the mail and our drop-off locations this morning,” he said. “Those are in the works of being processed, just like we always do every day.”

Watch Also: Appeals Court Declines to Intervene in California Ballot Dispute

All 58 California counties received letters from the U.S. Department of Justice late last week identifying people it…

[6
7,9,8
post-509356","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-california","tag-california","tag-california-headlines","tag-california-news
["GET
