(Courtesy of the Historic Oakland Foundation)

Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) originated over 3,000 years ago with the Aztec, Toltec, Purepecha, and other Nahua people, who considered mourning the dead disrespectful. For these pre-Hispanic cultures, death was a natural phase in life’s long continuum. The dead were still members of the community, kept alive in memory and spirit, and during Día de Muertos, they temporarily returned to Earth.

In Mexican cultural tradition, people die three deaths – the first death is when our bodies stop functioning; the second death is when the body is lowered into the ground and returned to Earth; the third and final death is when there is no one left alive to remember you or speak your name. The ofrendas and altars created by families on Dìa de Muertos delay this last death.

Admission is free and dressing up for the occasion is highly encouraged. Registration for the Catrín & Catrìna costume contest will be at the festival entrance with first place cash prizes for kids and adults. Street parking is limited and we encourage guests to rideshare, take MARTA, bike, or carpool.

For more information, visit: oaklandcemetery.com/dia-de-muertos-2026.

Now in its fourth year, Atlanta’s largest Dìa de Muertos celebration will return to Oakland Cemetery on Sunday,…

[34
143,22443,145,144
post-509542","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-oakland","tag-oakland","tag-oakland-cemetery","tag-oakland-headlines","tag-oakland-news
["GET
